Re: Clipping as intentional FX on drums

At least go into the fact that digital clipping is always wrong as well :) digital clipping can give you a really crunchy high-end-- can be great on snares. FWIW clipping is always up for discussion in mastering as well-- take a gander through gearslutz and see how many folks talk about clipping th...

Re: Clipping as intentional FX on drums

got a bass sound last week that was a stylophone into a mic pre adding 65db of gain (totally in the red), into an EQ pushed so hard that it started to self-modulate, into a distressor set on "nuke," pushed totally into the red, and then dialed back at the output to record at a normal level...

Re: Anyone have experience with a DX7

dx7's a bit of a one trick pony. A fun 1 trick pony, sure, but a pain to program and takes up a ton of space. for the same synth engine w/o the keyboard, the tx81z (seriously where does Yammy come up with these names) is a great bargain. again, the programming is such a pain that you'll wind up usin...

Re: Pre Amps/Interface/Ins & Outs

most samplers work at instrument-level, using TS cables, so yes, you need a preamp/DI. most usb boxes come w/ preamps in them... how good they depends on how much you're spending.

compressors and most studio gear are (usually) line level.

been loving my ortofon elektros for 7 years but can't say i play much vinyl these days.

the shure carts are always a good bet--- even those godawfully-ugly white label ones.

Re: Anyone used a Buttkicker? (force feedback

they make sense on stage when (as a drummer) you're using in-ear monitors and feel really detached from the energy on stage, in which case--they definitely enhance performance. they're also definitely NOT any sort of accurate representation of what's happening, sonically. I wouldn't put one at the t...

Re: Raw talent vs potential etc

I don't believe in talent. 10,000 hours is the rule. oh i thoroughly believe in talent. Regardless of how much you start with, hard work is non-negotiable if you want to get any sort of success, but i've done plenty of collabs, or worked with, lots of people who have no musical training but an inna...

dbx 163 or 163x (half-rack) are great. the 160 series is generally the good stuff from DBX, either actually hi-fi (160a, etc) or funky-- the rest is prosumer junk.

pros-- fucking AUTOSAVE. finally!

When things slow down in the fall, i might (might) consider upgrading, but i've got no time for the guaranteed hiccups of an upgrade right now.

plus i've got a lot of 32-bit plugs that i'm not looking to let go of.

Re: Today's electronic music

I went to a slammmmmmmmmed all-house-or-deep house-for-6-hours party in the park on Sunday and every tune was pretty much awesome. Granted, it was on a rude system, with top notch selectors, and a completely packed dancefloor-- so the fun element was egged up- but still, great music. Currently isten...

Re: 2nd pair of 'crap' monitors

auratones/avantones and the like are great tools for seeing how your mix will translate to less-than-optimum conditions. I'm considering getting a pair of NOS auratones to replace the thoroughly-bullshit computer speakers i have, which are almost more harm than good. with that said, i can't think of...

heads up that waves is changing their whole licensing thing... or something. is RennMaxx one of the renaissance plugin packs? If so, they're good. 10 years ago they were, hands down, the best basic eq's, comps, etc. nowadays i think the stock logic comp & eq sound better... but they're still usa...

- Sharmaji demonstrating some of his mic techniques ha :) the mic'ing isn't all that interesting... i'd be down to show off some mix stuff though, using a combo of hardware and software. what a certain signal path gives over another. again, not so sure how useful this'd be, as the program material ...
