Re: Why is an Analogue-type eq vst considered better than a
Oh boy :) http://www.evolutionmastering.com/analogue-digital-mastering/ I know this is titled specifically for mastering but It can be applied to mixing as well the differences between digital vs analog processing + touches a little on emulation. I've literally just finished this yesterday so though...

Re: Good audio engineering books?
I'd go straight into Bob Katz' contribution. Yes it says mastering in the title but it covers so much.

I also wrote a blog post on the matter as well. (It's mainly catered towards mastering but there's a fair few mix resources in there as well)

Re: Setting up a recording studio
In your shoes I'd just pick up a mic, decent interface (if you haven't already got one) and if you really want some analogue stuff get some cheap guitar pedals for adding drive etc. For a starter setup that will get you a long way and still keep a nice workflow.

Quite curious to see what others think of this as well. I've used a few sennheisers (got my HD600's as the latest) and interested to know how the perform at this price point.

Re: What is wrong with shit?
The community aspect has disappeared. Its not, lets all do something amazing in this sound only a few people know. Now you have to comment bare people and stuff to get the same back or make something what gets non-heads listening. Like a bootleg. Its all fucked. Case in point : my most listened to ...

Yeah been following the threads over on Gearslutz in the mastering section. The general consensus was (based on the results) that nobody is worried about being replaced by them any time soon!

Re: Producing with Depression
You just need to learn to reframe situations to improve your mood. Here's a list of bad frames / good frames Bad frames: -What if this is no good -What if people don't like it -What if I don't like it -What's the point if it isn't good Good frames: -This could be better than what I've made before wh...

Re: FLAC to WAV
As said we're converting from lossless to lossless, we should end up with perfect conversion without any loss of data.
Of course any meta data that was in the FLAC will be lost due to WAV not supporting.
I use XLD for my conversion on MAC does the job pretty well.

Re: with/without Compression?
You usually don't need compression. Two uses are when you have a filter that moves, and live instruments. The latter I've actually stopped using, though. Yeah the more complex/modulated a sound the more likely you will find compression beneficial. Something like a simple sine wave with no dynamic v...

Re: with/without Compression?
In the mix we create elements and process them in a way which gives musical relationships between them. - The way the kick hits compared to how the sub moves - The way the snare hits (usually in contrast to the bass'y rhythm elements) etc etc All of these little things add up and move us in a certai...
