Re: Fanu - Taking a break, and the new album

the quality-- consistent quality-- of fanu's stuff is just shocking. Had he only done "defunct drums depression decade," that'd be a enough to label him a legend. Of course, the fact that *I like it makes me totally unsurprised that it's not commercially successful ;) it's as much art musi...

almost grabbed one a few years ago but they were way too expensive back then. Used, seems like a great deal. the hipass filter is especially nice.

Re: Somewhat clean but flavorful source of gain...

if you're using audio units, you can't beat "drive" and "density" from airwindows. FREE. and brilliant. decapitator from soundtoys Saturn ( think it's saturn?) from Fab Filter that harmonic EQ from voxengo. also free. 1176 set to no compression, or pultec EQ not doing anything......

starting point: 1176 on busses SSL on master both 4:1, doing very little (2-3 db at most, less for the SSL) i keep a couple of aux's open w/ 1176's on them in case thing need to vibe more together before the master, ie; drums, perc, and bass go to one 1176, vox, synths, guitars go to another. those ...

Re: What Is Mastering? Blog

Typically, aside from volume, I hear no difference when I A/B with a compressor. first, match the gain so that you can actually hear what's going on; if one version is twice as loud as the other, it's gonna sound better. compression is my #1 tool for bringing things forward, or pushing things back,...

Re: anyone use an MPC?

This is pretty much spot on. I wasn't writing in favor of farting around endlessly (though sometimes honestly I do like to just fart around and not really get anything done). Its taken almost all the not so many years I've been at this to figure out working fast and committing to ideas quickly is p...

Re: anyone use an MPC?

sigh.... here's what matters: work fast. FAST. your ideas deserve that level of commitment. Set yourself a 3 hour limit to write, program, and get a rough mix of a tune done. and I mean like 90% DONE. so that when you come back to it, all you have to work on is some transitions, mixing, tweaks, mayb...

Re: anyone use an MPC?

I owned an mpc1k for a few years and did a lot of work with it. A couple of entirely in-the-MPC songs and remixes, and a ton of programmed patterns for other songs, which i'd then dump (stem by stem), into logic. Was definitely fun for creating patterns. not much fun for creating songs. miserable fo...

yeah neither of those mixes totally blow me away TBH, but #2 has some nice stuff going on. "expensive" sounding mixes in a nutshell? --a dynamic, performed "mix." Mix is a verb. --great performances from the musicians or vocalist (if there is a vocalist) --proper amount of dynami...

Re: My new audio components - please help

Adam F series monitors agreed, recently did some mobile sessions on some small Adams-- they've really stepped up their game in the lower-end. Extremely easy to work on, i could hear what was going on thru the spectrum, and didn't feel like i'd had my face kicked in after 8 hours-- can't say that ab...

Re: How do you guys prefer to handle your drums in logic?

Audio if things are in midi form-- usually layers from stylus, etc-- they get bounced down to audio ASAP. May I ask why? couple of things-- commitment to the song, first and foremost. Get the part, get it as grooving as possible, move on. for programmed drums (rather than recorded live), i'd rather...

Couple of thoughts: -- music being "work" ain't a bad thing at all- madEP, myself, and at least few others from dsf:p make a loving making music full-time. I count myself among the lucky ones to be able to do so. -- making dance music that is an expression of yourself is, in most cases, a ...
