The ‘Unwitting War’ on Vinyl - The Debate
The ‘Unwitting War’ on Vinyl - The Debate
Blu Mar Ten have put out a call to get some talk around the ‘Unwitting War’ on Vinyl. In my small capacity as a DJ I have always been plagued by the poor quality of record decks, often thinking that the bigger more high profile clubs had decent equipment. Around me, all I hear is that I need to move to CD’s, or even laptops and mp3’s. (http://www.sub-bassmusic.com/profiles/b ... on-vinyl-a)
“I was hoping that the rise of Serato would encourage clubs to start maintaining their decks a little better, but I still see laptop DJs struggling as much as vinyl DJs which is a real shame”. Chris Marigold on http://www.blumarten.com/home/war-on-vinyl-update

Re: The ‘Unwitting War’ on Vinyl - The Debate
I hate it when clubs' turntables haven't been maintained / looked after properly. There are even some clubs who say "Can you play on CDJ's" which I also dislike.
This needs to be addressed and sorted!

Re: The ‘Unwitting War’ on Vinyl - The Debate
While on tour I arrived at one un-named club to find no decks at all and when I asked I got a sideways face reply saying "You use vinyl" lol
Personally I think the war is over, vinyl sales aren’t good - its the trend as stated in the link above. I am a vinyl junkie, thousands of records from when I started taking trains to Croydon when I was 14yrs old lol This is why I went with Serato as the answer to my problems with getting so many dubs I wanted to play. I love mixing with records and personally (I'm ready to take heat on this) think its harder and takes more skill to mix with them compared to CD's but most of all I just didnt have the heart to let go of that way of mixing...
BUT
I'm not looking for a CDJ purely cos I'm fed up with arriving at clubs and having to setup serato only to find the decks/mixer are in such a poor state it affects serato. In the 4yrs or so I've been using serato my laptop or serato has never failed, only the club provided equipment!
My 1210's will always be with me until the day I die, I'll be spinning accent Dubstep to my grandkids while showing the what an 80yr old bassface looks like!

Re: The ‘Unwitting War’ on Vinyl - The Debate
Theres been a steady decline in clubs since the 80's starting with the sound systems, club owners need to sort themselves out, the number of times over the years I have run nights in Bristol and the club didnt even own a set of decks, its a joke.
I'm still only going to play vinyl/acetate though, and if that means the set runs into problems, ill point them in the direction of the club owner. Might have to start taking decks with me instead of just carts+styli!

One venue where I run gigs and have a residency is Twisted Pepper in Dublin and they are real music people. They maintain their equipment really well, never any problems with decks and they pay really good attention to riders getting exact needles and decks (CDJs) requested.
Proud to play there and proud to recommend it.

I'd love to play in my home land, happy to see its getting repped hard over there now! Next time I go home to visit my parents I may even take a bag of records... Bet Ryan air would rape me for the weight of the bag tho lol!drlego wrote:One venue where I run gigs and have a residency is Twisted Pepper in Dublin and they are real music people. I should point out that I'm not saying all clubs are like this but in a place where they make money from people coming to see a DJ play you'd expect the tools for the DJ to be top notch everywhere!
LOL @ Kid, your not far off mate! Least if someone tries to mug you you can jawside em with a 1020!

Re: The ‘Unwitting War’ on Vinyl - The Debate
This horse must have been flogged down to it’s skeleton now, mind you it is depressing. Although I can see the points from both sides. I sway toward ‘get with the times man’ but then I think, Vinyl is the basis of this shit, so naturally it should come first format-wise.
I will raise the point though, a good DJ works with ANYTHING. Reel to Reel, fucking MPC Sequencers, a plastic cup and pencils... as long as you prepare for any situation, you shouldn’t need to argue.

Re: The ‘Unwitting War’ on Vinyl - The Debate
i've trashed a few dubs playing on fucked decks where it's hopped, skipped, and jumped its way through half the plate. gutting.
so serato it is, with regret ...
(that and not being able to move my records from melbourne to london.)
