digital mystikz album speculation

Post by reptilian » Wed May 02, 2007 10:23 am

seen as a fair few people seem to want "albums" and all that but dubstep, like other dance music tracks, are not as good out of context as single tracks...
i think they should just release a really good mix cd, like a "best of" including classic releases and dubplates and that? could drop in some amazing new dubs as well...why not?

Dubstep albums work very well in my opinion. And also, I always prefere vinyl over any other medium.

i guess some work better than others. though in the mystikz case i think malas deep selection and creative djing would be better than listening to each track individually.

i dont think there will be a mala / coki / digitalmystikz album for a long while yet, mixed or otherwise - that is the impression i got from their blackdown interview anyway

I know they don't really want to do an lp but I'm sure plenty of labels would be up for putting it out.

Wishful thinking i know but wouldn't it be brilliant if a label (warp for instance but could be anyone) said here's our back catalogue, remix it, replay it do whatever to it and we'll release it. That would be interesting

Funny you should mention Warp, I had a feeling they were very interested in Digital Mystikz at one point as they kept posting their shows in the news section and there's a mention of signing them in an interview with MAH on there somewhere. This is pure speculation of course, I actually know nothing.

The impression I get though is that DMZ just want to do their own thing which is fair enough.

Personally I reckon a compilation CD like Tectonic or Skull Disco would go down a storm.

its the blackdownsoundboy interview that got me thinking. my post was about the form that i thought the album should eventually take. ie. unmixed album vs. mixed album etc.

I'd vote for unmixed. Digital Mystiks certainly has the potential to be as album worthy as Massive Attack.

If this ever happend...both mixed and unmixed please.

Feel the Mystikz songs are strong enough to stand alone. But nice to have a mix for the ipod/ car/ Shuubs.

I've always thought mixed albums are inferior to unmixed ones. They have a slight novelty feel to me. Just my opinion.

they should press a 2LP on 210 gram vinyl, and have the first record with 4 or 5 new tracks, and their 4 or 5 favorite ones from the 11 DMZ 12"s on the second one!

...if only...

a mix can be a musical statement in its own right. and in a way its how the tunes are supposed to be heard. if it was really nicely packaged and well thought out, it would give those who might not already be into dubstep an authentic listen if you know what i mean..when i used to like drum n bass back in 97 (and with jungle earlier on) i used to get pissed off that all the good mixes were limited to live sets/tape packs etc and the cds were like compilations of full tunes.

Ed Rush & Optical - Wormhole also springs to mind. 2cds, half mixed, half non-mixed, all amazing.
