Oinky

POLICE in the region have said they have closed down one of the world's biggest illegal music file sharing websites.

The site is understood to have been operating from a flat in Middlesbrough.

Up to 180,000 people were members of the private www.oink.co.uk website.

They paid to upload and download music, some of it not yet released by record companies.

The home of a 24-year-old IT worker was raided in Grange Road, Middlesbrough, was raided in a low-key operation this morning.

At the same time his father's home and his employer, a large multi-national company, were also raided.

The website's server, which was based in Amsterdam, was also closed down by Dutch police.

The 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and infringement of copyright law.

Detective Sergeant Tony Keogh, who led this morning's operation, said the three-month investigation had involved Interpol, the Dutch authorities and the British Phonographic Industry.

He said: "This is an infringement of copyright law that in financial terms causes immeasurable lost to record companies.

"We have been working closely with Interpol and our Dutch colleagues in Amsterdam where the website server is based to ensure that it too was secured at the time of arrest."

Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full with what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming:
Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?

in terms of intellectual property it is the same thing :) but ive mixed feelings about illegal music downloads cos i work in the industry. dont really feel the same way about tv streaming tho, i dont watch much, just gimme brass eye and fawlty towers!

How exactly was a free file sharing site with no ads "Extremely lucrative"? I would also dispute the fact that it was a "creative scheme", as there are hundreds of other torrent sites running on near identical code, but that's splitting hairs.

RIP :(

site that introduced me to a shitload of music

Hail piracy, i would not be on this forum without it. Would not spend my money on 320 dubstep mp3s without it either...

big up oink peeps --- extremely culturally big achievement in my opinnion, even keepin it goin for how long as it did...

PS. don't wanna start a fight or nuttin saying all this --- just stating facts and my personal opinion.

Tv-links never hosted any content itself, it was just links to video content hosted on Google Video, Youtube, etc. That's the difference.

The content is still out there....just one less site to organize it all.

yes, tv sucks that much, dont watch tv at all.
in terms of intellectual property its exactly the same thing as u said so, here in portugal a website got closed for streaming some 'closed' channels (mean payed chs) thought it streamed some other 'opened' chs it simply got 'banned' for broadcasting some pay-on-demand (and stuff) portuguese channels! surely thats so much easier closing a place in the internet that is streaming tv channels than closing a blog or a board that shares tons of musical material, pure reality!

Thats completely different, another story on that one though those services like Youtube and so on has to host procedures so they can resolve some illegal content if someone decided to flag an inappropriate stuff, exactly the same with that hosting file services like Rapidshare, they have to host Report systems so people can flag illegal stuff, you will agree with me that there are some websites streaming copyrighted and private chs using Sopcast, Tvants, TVU technologies, and thats so illegal as dowloading copyrighted music.

I use tv-links at work all the time just use this to find other sites with media content:

http://www.ovguide.com/

Dont want to jump on the whole debate of illegal streaming of shows and such i pay a tv licence, go to the pictures, rent dvds legit so its not like i dont contribute anything

taken from the Oink's site, oinc.cd

This site has been closed as a result of a criminal investigation by IFPI, BPI,
Cleveland Police and the Fiscal Investigation Unit of the Dutch Police (FIOD ECD) into
suspected illegal music distribution.

A criminal investigation continues into the identities and activities of the site's
users

mediadefender don't fuck about, do they. :o

seems a bit funny that all these raids and arrests have happened on the heels of their monumentally massive cock up. smacks of desperation a bit
