Quintessential Grime? pointers pls!

Post by jayar » Sat Feb 28, 2009 10:59 pm

Hey yo

When i first got into dubstep (yeah yeah, im another one of those jaded ex-d&b'ers) i really wasnt quite feeling much for Grime and totally hated UKG, but lately im not so dark on the Grime (largely thanks to the guy i share a radio show with) and want to get a quick edumacation!

I did a search on this site to look for similar threads, but no joy

Can a few of you point me in the direction of some quintessential grime tunes/albums for me to check out? more the 'hits' or major turning points, definining tunes etc if you get me.

Cheers! :)

2 most important grime beats:

musical mobb - pulse x and
wiley - eskimo

Those are the foundations. Musical Mobb and Youngstar were key 8-bar producers (simple grime beats switching a/b/a/b every 8 bars), also check Alias, Oddz, Eastwood, Ruff Sqwad, all of Wiley's early eskibeats, (Ice rink, Eskimo remixes, Ice Pole, Snowman etc.), Danny Weed, anything on Jah Mek The World (Jammer's label, Lewi White also wicked), Terra Danjah and Slimzos (Slimzee's label).

In terms of albums/mixtapes

Dizzee - Boy in da corner
Wiley - Treadin on thin ice and da 2nd phase
Ruff Sqwad - Guns and Roses 1 and 2
Young dot - RIP Young Dot
Trim - Soul Food 1-3
Slimzee - Bingo Beats 3
Rinsessesions CD pack
Slew Dem - Non stop working
Roll Deep - Creeper 1 and 2

In terms of sets get on grimetapes and download some 2003 NASTY Crew, Roll Deep and Ruff Sqwad and work forwards from there! Good luck.

This page of all the Logan Sama radio sets with all the big Grime Mcs

my blog

www.butterz.co.uk for up front new grime music in the mix and interviews from current producers.

albums wise.

Rascal - boy in the corner
Wiley - 2nd Phaze and Grime Wave
JME - Famous? as well as his BBK 1-3 Mixtapes
Skepta- Greatest Hits
Tinchy v Maniac
Roll Deep - Rules & Regulations is ok

Most of grimes greatest moments though are on sets or on obscure cds and vinyl. It is a hard scene to get into

yeah i'd say that's pretty good advice.

just download everything on grimetapes.com basically. Grime's studio recorded output has very, very rarely matched the quality and atmosphere of the best pirate radio sets.

important to remember a lot of these classic grime tunes were being mixed with other stuff like dark breakbeat influenced garage of DJ Zinc, Wookie's Exemen alias and early heavy dubstep
