looks like i may need to rewire some reason back into live and see if i cant growl one of these reeses out. Thanks for the info everyone provided.

Nice one. Maybe sounding just a bit thin but with good saturation you can get there, but I'm really replying to say I loved the part at 1:23 :6: that pitched saw gave it quite a touch.

The eventual noises I'm coming out with are a bit thin. I'm going to try again (once i've cracked this accounting assignment!) by splitting the frequencies, otherwise your sounds are going to come out ridiculously thin and weak.

Also, it's a bit annoying since when I get the sound, resample it then begin playing around with melodies in the sampler it doesn't really work well. I'm guessing I need to multi-sample the sound then map it out to different zones.

I had quite a bit of success last night in Reason as well, Maelstrom, only once instance with the sawtooth-24 tables (I believe) with of course, scream distortion (set to scream mode) and a bandpass filter within Maelstrom. It sounds thick and nasty

I'll post some examples and a tut if anyone is interested later tonight.

Haven't really read much of the thread, but last night on the "mau5Hax" stream Kill The Noise explained the basics of the Talk To Me bass. It's based around a Massive patch that uses Modern Talking, he also used an external distortion unit (controlled by a foot pedal so possibly a guitar dist. unit?) and finally chopped bits up to make it sound like "Talk To Me" although he even admitted that interpreting the "voice" is mostly psychological.

Yeah that. What actually makes it talk is the voice sample before that creates the illusion.

One tip, try to have the vocal sample and the growl at the same note. And tweak the ENV's or automations to give it a similar movement to the vocal.

That's pretty impressive, modulation wise. I think now you need to add distortion (try mixing various kinds), some layering for more body, some multiband compression. Basically, Fat it up! lol

Thanks E-mo. Tough thing is... after layering and what not, I tend to lose the detail of the simulated talking. There's a balance that I just can't get yet. I am not the best at compression and I need to work on it. Here's a second try at the sound.

I don't think that is a good way to use the throat wavetable of malstrom, i already tried and didn't get good sound with it.
It's easier to get something clean with the electronic wavetable, try to layer it with an other waveform, then play with the index and shift down the waveform, set an enveloppe and add fx (a bit of distortion etc..). Put your BP filter at the end of the fx chain (ECF or a thor with a State variable filter). Hope it will help

Mind giving me some details about the filter automation? I think I got grip on the reese part of the koan sound sound, but the filtering is so frustrating, not knowing witch type of filter I should use and stuff... :roll:

Thanks guys. As far as what not to do, I wouldn't stack up a million plug-ins on top of each other to try and squeeze the sound out. I've tried Sugarbytes WOW and stuff but I thought it sounded a bit "un-natural" for what I was trying to get it to do. My chain for the main bass sound in Mean Machines was literally just Massive going into FabFilter's Saturn, then a lot of eq'ing with Pro-Q during mixdown but no automation at that point. Getting vocally was just setting the routing in Massive up right. I put the filters on parallel and both set to bandpass, I was using an lfo and step performer on the cutoff of both. Then I set insert 2 to kick in after both filters and set it to Sine Shaper. I've found that when trying to make talky basses distortion in the right places can make or break it. using normal distortion modes can add harmonics that will get rid of the vowel, wave shaping and foldback distortion is what I've had the best luck with. then in Saturn (which is one of the best distortion plugs imo because of the modulation matrix) I set up 4 bands and lowered the mids and added just a little warm tape saturation for a little character, not really going for heavy distortion anymore, and an lfo on the drive of each band. Modulating distortion makes some very interesting results. Also, I use ableton and I use the instrument rack macros a LOT. I'll set a bunch of parameters to just one knob and mess with the intensity amounts across all the plug ins in the chain to get a ton more movement out then just standard LFO's, and I love the rack's because it provides a way to channel automation across multiple plugs at the same time, and save out a bunch of versions easily. I also made a pretty similar sound using just FM8 and the instrument racks as well. Hope this helps. Another word of advice that helped me a lot was to try to make sounds that are VERY versatile, in that you can actually "write" music with them instead of just sounding mean and not just a one shot sound. even if it takes months to make that sound, its worth it instead of having a million unusable throaty sounds.

Resampling is the magic trick! :) I would really not go with elektronic waveform, its too crunchy, the vaweforms or whatever its called is "too far away" from eachother. Now, Saw-waves are too close to eachother, but if you layer like 8 detuned saws you get something close.

What you do next is bounce the bass in to an audio file, load it into a nn19 sampler. Split the output to 3 different EQ'a with a spider. Fiddle with the knobs until you got Low Mid and High separate on each EQ. So you got only Mid on one, only low on the other and so forth. Then modulate the mid. Or high or whatever. Add tube or tape distortion to get it more crisp.

Thats it.

The difficult from what I have experienced is not finding the right oscilattor, its finding the right frequencies in the EQ's. This can get mudddy real easy. Still havent figured out how the hell they do it but I guess its a matter of experience really. :Q:
