What I've learned about making growl/wowel basses

Post by SkuxxOfficial » Mon Apr 28, 2014 7:35 pm

Okay, so the "how to make growl bass" thread has been really helpful, and the guy who started it (HookJunior) is a member in BARELY ALIVE (one of two guys).

I think he learned all that he knows and how to make growls because of the "how to make growl bass thread". He took that info got posted, started BA and thats why they have all the massive and huge growls. I think HookJr was really smart, cause the reason he started it was not only to help, and make a thread about it, but also to learn shit and make good music (no hate).

I've read almost the whole thread now, and from what I've seen, this is what you need to know and/or buy.

Basic VSTs/Plugins;

Massive
FM8
Sytrus
Harmor
Sylenth1
Razor (not really, but...)

WOW filter
Ohmnicide
Sausage Fattener
*insert compressor*
Any EQ <--- Important
And of course reverb and all the built-in stuff that every DAW has (if not, it's shit and you need to switch)

How to make them (the basics).

So the best way of making good growls is the most complicated.

The idea is to have a main VST (Massive, FM8, Harmor etc). You can either make just a single bass with no movement, or make a growl thats already pretty strong inside the box, you choose. Then you need to process it by (example);
Distort it (Ohmicide), Fatten it (SF), add a little WOW filter (only a little, to much will be obvious and thats now what we want), and then make an EQ automation. Then modulate the WOW filter, Eq and add some other things (that you want to add) and you should have a basic growl.

Back to our little chittchatt... You may ask yourself, why did you make this facking thread you facking bitch, there is already the "How to make a growl bass" thread, this thread has no facking point.

If you do that, Calm the fuck down, okay? :a:

I made this thread so that we can sum up everything that has been said in "how to growl bases" thread, and just bring it to one place, cause we don't need all the stuff that doesn't help us.

Any more thoughts? Can we actually be smart, put our brains together and just make fucking growls. :w:

Happy birthday, cheers.

Oh sh*** here comes another 127 page thread. No no jk there... I do agree. I think because it is so long and accounts for 98% of this forum's traffic, a summary of all it's contents (that are helpful) would be good. I'm actually surprised no one has made an all in one growlitizer plugin yet to be honest.

But in order to make this thread last, we need to keep it alive. Any ideas/thoughts? Have you read anything interesting?

well I usually use fm8 for my growls (I dont know why but I am much better in fm8 than Massive) and the problem I discoverd is that most people using fm8 think it have to be some totally complicated waveforms like a lot of 10th Formant´s and all that kinda stuff but I actually think that you can achieve much better growls with more "standard" waveforms like sine, saw, triangle

so my tip for you fm8 user´s try to limit yourself a little bit more to the "standard" waveforms it makes for some great sounds

(sorry for my grammar and stuff because English isn´t my mother tounge :z: )

Well, no one has postad anything in a while, so I'd like to make a post and tell you guys what I've learned the last weeks or so. So, I've found something to make your growls, growlier (if thats a word), and it is a...
PHASER!!!

I'm not kidding, Barely Alive use it *alot* and it makes the growl 'growl' more - if that makes any sens at all.
Just try it, mess around. I think you can use any phaser at all, but I like albetons built in phaser the most. Make sure when you insert a phaser, that its not automated by a LFO or an envelope. Just have it there.
In albeton, put the phaser x-y fade knob thing in the middle, and all the way up.

TRY IT!!!

In FM8 have a triangle wave with a little feedback modulate a sine wave, and automate the modulation amount.

I ran that into guitar rig to get this:

Just want to give the flanger a shoutout, I use FL's stock flanger and the flangus plugins to get these kinda sounds

Soundcloud

Also try throwing on a fruity chorus and turning the delay to the minimum, works wonders in certain situations.

I have learned a lot from The Growl Bass Thread as well and is now the main reason I have this growl.

I will say this, a still PHASER is the trick. Modulating the frequency inside it to match the growls vowels will give you the full sound of the hollow sounding "Oouuuuughhh" vowel that Barely Alive does.

Its in Private

Hey just reporting in!
Phasers are essentially just notching the sound. Try mimicking the phaser with an EQ then modulation one or two of the notches. That usually sounds really cool.
