Vinyl Decks - I KNOW NOTHING

Post by magma » Wed Apr 17, 2013 2:03 pm

Me and the lady have decided we're going to start a joint vinyl collection - mainly old stuff for now, I've been meaning to start a soul and jazz collection for ages and she's into old Rock 'n' Roll, but I'll probably end up buying a few modern bits to have a mix with every now and again so I guess I need a turntable that's vaguely DJ friendly and that I can put another one alongside at some point.

I genuinely know NOTHING about record players. The last one I had broke when I was about 15 (the same number of years ago) and I only ever got that because my older brother decided he needed a better one.

Assume I need direct drive, but apart from that I'm just staring blankly and trying to guess from prices!

Good makes? Bad makes? Essential features? Stuff I'm never likely to use?

Help me SNH, you're my only hope. :strooper:

Check gumtree and locals and you will probably find Technics for a steal, times are tough, so things of such nature are the first on peoples sell list.

Honestly if you're planning on ever building it up into a dj set up 1210s/1200s are kind of worth it as you'll probably never have to buy anything else ever again aside from a second one. They're fucking solid regardless though and so easy to fix if shit goes wrong.

If it's purely for listening and you never see it being used for djing I have got genuinely good turntables from this second hand hi fi store (literally sells nothing else apart from hi-fis and records) for not much cash so honestly second hand I think will honestly be the way to go as unless you're willing to part with serious money a new turntable for the same price will probably be pretty rubbish.

Nice one - that makes a lot of sense. No point in saving £100 only to have to replace the entire deck when it breaks in 12 months, I guess... plus I can probably buy one and double-up easy enough whenever I like.

Thanks Ninjas! :w:

Probably goes against the whole DJ equipment elitist vibe, but if you're not gonna DJ, just get a fairly cheap deck, invest more in needles and the soundsystem as a package.

Go for Gumtree... price of Technics has gone up massively recently, you might find someone who hasn't caught wind of this selling some. (But never send an online payment to someone for a gumtree ad; do in person w/cash).

If you look after it/them, and maybe even replace some parts they'll only ever increase in value too :W:

ALMOST did this on a whim a few months ago, but I managed to slap myself in the face before I threw £50 down the drain.

I think Technics are probably the way to go... better keep my eye on Gumtree! If anyone's looking to get rid, give me a shout... I'll give it/them a terribly good home, I promise.

theyve stopped making technics 1210s so if you pick some up second hand they might turn out to be a good investment in ten years time.
ive already seen the price of parts increase

shit the realisation that they no longer make 1210s just sank in
