Re: secret ninja end of the year toplists
ok imma start this off
Peverelist – 12,000 Seconds (Magic + Dreams)
nice to see pev going back to melodies
Martyn – The Air Between Words (Ninja Tune)
not his best work imo but still delivers
Szare – Lost Shapes / Carved in Those Dancing Gravestones (Frozen Border)
sick double album. sorta in the same space as alex coulton, beneath, hodge, shackleton etc just more techno/house
Shinichi Atobe – Butterfly Effect (Demdike Stare)
great comeback. “butterly effect” is a tune
Deepchord – Lanterns (Astral Industries)
Cezar – Om Vedea (Understand)
great microhouse lp
Lukid – Crawlers (Liberation Technologies)
“nine” = banger of the year for me
Reiner Veil – New Brutalism (Modern Love)
Millie & Andrea – Drop The Vowels (Modern Love)
Andy Stott – Faith In Strangers (Modern Love)
modern love were on a roll this year. tackling rave music from different angles
Kassem Mosse – Workshop 19 (Workshop)
Lowtec – Workshop 20 (Workshop)
workshop at its finest
Knowone – Knowone 15 (Knowone)
excellent dub techno
Saga – Flight Risk (Lit City Trax)
dude’s the best new grime producer imo
Function & Inland – Odeon / Rhyl (Infrastructure NY)
Killing Sound - $ixxx Harmonie$ Version (Blackest Ever Black)
Theo Parrish – Footwork / Tympanic Warfare (Sound Signature)
prefer the b-side tbh
Omar-S – FXHE 10 Year Compilation Mixes Vol. 1 & 2 (FXHE)
Wen – Signals (Keysound)
Peverelist – Roll With The Punches (Kownton Mixes) (Punch Drunk)
+ pretty much anything Hodge, Beneath, Alex Coulton, Randomer, NGLY & Facta released
VANIISH – Memory Work (Metropolis)
shoegaze-y post-punk. formerly veil veil vanish
Hail The Sun – Wake (Blue Swan)
dance gavin dance/circa survive-ish post-hardcore. blue swan is a great new label for this sound
Artifex Pereo – Time In Place (Tooth & Nail)
same as above
Circa Survive – Descensus (Sumerian)
not as good as their previous albums but still sick
Rot In Hell – Ruined Empire (Organized Crime)
one of my favourite bands atm. half of the record is sick metallic hardcore in the vein of integrity and half is neofolk and country
Cold Cave – Full Cold Moon (Heartworm Press)
compilation of recent singles & eps. cold cave’s best material so far imo
Issues – Issues (Rise)
kinda bait and probably unappealing as fuck for anyone over 17 as it’s metalcore w/ rnb vocals and edm/numetal elements but I really like this srs. Also helps that these bros can actually play and sing and don’t believe they’re godsend unlike most of their label mates
honorable mentions:
Clouds presents ...I Care Because You Don't (Turbo)
STL – At Disconnected Moments (Smallville)
Chord Marauders – Groove Booty Vol. 3 (Chord Marauders)
Dalhous – Will To Be Well + Visibility Is A Trap (Blackest Ever Black)
SHXCXCHCXSH – Linear S Decoded (Avian)
Sigha – The Purification Loops (Avian)
Container – Adhesive (Liberation Technologies)
Campbell Irvine – Removal Of The Six Armed Goddess (Infrastructure NY)

Kerridge – Deficit of Wonder (Blueprint)
Cut Hands – Festival Of The Dead (Blackest Ever Black)
Function & Vatican Shadow – Games Have Rules (Hospital Productions)
Arditi – Imposing Elitism (Temple Of Death Productions)
Vatican Shadow – Death Is Unity With God (Hospital Productions)
Prurient – Washed Against The Rocks (Handmade Birds)
Treha Sektori - Severh Sehenh (Cyclic Law)
Church of Ra – s/t (Consouling Sounds)
Developer – In Pure Form (Modularz)
Oscar Mulero – Break Down Remixes (HueHelix)
Full of Hell & Merzbow – s/t (Profound Lore)
Young And In The Way – When Life Comes To Death (Deathwish Inc.)
Whirr / Nothing split 12” (Run For Cover)
Hyperdub compilations
some late additions and a couple of bits i forgot to mention before:
Oake - Auferstehung (Downwards)
new favourite atm
Marshstepper - A New Sacrament Of Penance (Downwards America)
The KVB - Out Of Body EP (A Records)
more shoegaze-y post-punk
Shackleton - Deliverance Series No. 1 & 2 (Woe To The Septic Heart)
All Your Sisters - Modern Failures (Beläten)
post-punk/ebm. defo listen to "come feel"
Peverelist – 12,000 Seconds (Magic + Dreams)

yay my favourite topic is back!! can't wait to go through these! can't think of anything to add myself lol

Re: secret ninja end of the year toplists
lol listened to that issues bit.. would be better without the screaming IMO screaming + clean vocals have mostly been off putting for me as a combination. but can't deny the RnB tip on the clean ones give this one an edge. too teenage music doe lol would have liked this when I was 16

Re: secret ninja end of the year toplists
Didn't really listen to new stuff so much this year
Two off the top:
Migos - Bricks
Gantz - Baby Face

Re: secret ninja end of the year toplists
eh screaming + clean vocals can work but sometimes it does bring the music down a bittopmo3 wrote:lol listened to that issues bit.. would be better without the screaming IMO screaming + clean vocals have mostly been off putting for me as a combination. but can't deny the RnB tip on the clean ones give this one an edge. too teenage music doe lol would have liked this when I was 16
guessing the target audience for this stuff still wants to be hardcore even though they're basically listening to pop
Re: secret ninja end of the year toplists
yeah although I've always thought it's not the fact that there's screaming as well as clean vocals, it's just how they are executed and how the music sounds like. 4 times outta 5 it's garbage but then again I'm not an expert on emo / screamo etc so I don't necessarily know the good stuff but I'm sure I've heard some hardcore with almost clean vocs plus regular screaming that was ok

Re: secret ninja end of the year toplists
Nice list Ultra but you listed the Function and Vatican Shadow record as Prurient and Vatican Shadow.
I'm holding off on mine until the end of December as there's still more coming out. For example the Paths album coming out on Werewolf Promotion sounds like it could be really god.
