The Wire
anyone watch this? it's easily the best tv programme i've ever seen, it's like the sopranos meets boyz n the hood only that's a short sell of mammoth proportions.
it's a complete look at every level of the drugs trade & the police war against it in Baltimore; everyone with even a remote connection to the heroin trade shares the spotlight, from addict to street dealer, crimelord to beat police, detective to police comissioner to judge and beyond.
it's amazing, seriously. there's 3 series of it out already and the fourth has just started on american tv last sunday. it's available to buy on dvd or to "buy" on The Site That Spies On Torrents wink wink nudge nudge

Yeah, its good shit man!
Watched the whole first series last week - couldn't stop once I started.
Holistic.
Just as much internal politics and punishments on both sides of the "war".
Shows the endless cycle of give and take betwen police and dealers.
Generally pretty damn good.
I think I'll have to "buy" the next couple of series too...

best show on TV.
i've seen every episode of every season.
I'm not sure anything will top season 3:
Barksdale's release from prison
Prop Joe taking over
Marlo's resurgence to the streets
the drama w/the police department
Barksdale having Stringer killed,
Brother Mouzon and of course...Omar.
Personally, I think Omar is the best individual character on television. Better than Jack Bauer from 24. Better than Scofield from Prison Break. Better than the two cops on Law and Order SVU.
Omar is the guy.
1. He's a vigilante and he has a posse.
2. He walks around town w/a 12 gauge shotgun.
3. The police hate him....(he knows all of the drug dealers and he refuses to cooperate.)
4. The drug lords hate him...(he consistenly sticks up their runners for the drugs and cash.)
5. Neither side really wants to go to war with Omar. Basically, he's untouchable.
and -- as an added twist..
6. Omar has a boyfriend.
there are probably more important characters on the show (McNulty, the mayor, Barksdale), but Omar is it.
i'm still waiting for my casting call -- but that's another story.

lol, before long they'll have half of baltimore in that show. my mom told me last weekend that my cousin is playing one of the cops this season.
I had no clue who she was talking about since I have so many damn cousins.

bump! just finished season 4 after starting the first only a couple of months ago.. totally addicted. I'm probably going to get the DVDs and watch them all over again now.
I reckon season 4 was the best so far
wasn't really into season 3 so much. was still good but it was a bit 'hollywood'. big EVENTS and ACTION every episode that really stood in stark contrast to how they'd presented the show before, especially season 2 which was even slower paced and deeper than the first. I thought the Brother character was just stupid... really over the top and unbelievable, especially compared to the ultra-realist stance of the rest of the show. even Omar tests the limits of believability a bit, but he's a superhero, and basically the only character with morals, so it doesn't matter.
season 4 was the perfect balance, and I thought they dealt with the schools thing really well without being too preachy. the mayoral election/politics stuff was a really interesting addition too.
