Does anyone else think Watchmen is a bit pony?

Post by firky » Sun Mar 08, 2009 3:27 pm

Utterly confused film, it can't make it's mind up what it wants to be.

Entertaining yes.
Good no.

Erm, no spoilers. Hence my rather shit and brief review :D

Yeah, years ago. That's why I didn't like it. The comic is more like a cracked mirror with shades of grey. This is just black 'everything is shit' emo-esque.

I loved parts of it, te hippy girl who famously put a flower in a soldier of a gun gets wiped out, and the sailor kissing his bird is replaced by two lasses kissing. Clever inventive stuff that isn't present later on :(

Most of the reviews seemed to say it got the tone right, but there is too much in the comic to fit into a mainstream movie.

And I have no idea what you mean by 'pony'. I'm assuming it's some shitty slang for rubbish.

hmmmm, was good but not great, will have to see it again in non-massive-imax-getting-distracted-by-giant-genitals to give a fair verdict.

some of the little touches were great though,

did anyone notice when they hack into Ozymandus computer there's a folder on his desktop called "boys"? fuckin lol

came away feeling utterly meh about it. but that's not to say it wasn't enjoyable. it's undeniably cool and slick, a pleasure to watch... but despite the fact I thought I had suitable lowered my expectations, totally disappointing. a big part of it was that the sfx were so unbelieveably self indulgent.

case in point, the opening scene; in the comic, the comedian gets roughed up abit and launched out the window. cue 3 and a half minutes of bullet time porn, with the violence factor increased by a factor of 10. i must have skipped those 10 pages where he gets smashed through a collection of stylish glass tables in a series of increasingly implausible ninja throws. i'm sitting there thinking, just chuck him out the fucking window already and lets start the film

it was really well cast, in terms of both looks and voice talent.. smart move not getting any big faces, but lacked any of emotional import from the source. i was left totally cold by the mars sequences, amongst the best sections of the comic imo. i wish they hadn't bothered really cos, when it comes down to it, it's just not good enough. can't stop the hollywood steamroller though, more's the pity.

not saying it wasn't a good effort, some seriously hard work has gone into it. Snyder is just the wrong guy, wrong wrong wrong for a story like this. Seeing as it stayed so faithful to the comic in a lot of ways, i'm inclined to think the greatest achievement of this film was to sap any of the gritty verve, and the danger, that the graphic novel had in spades right the fuck out of the story.

however

What I heard, they thought "The world likes seeing pitchblack antihero stories", but then Batman came and did it.

End of story.

All it is another standard 'cool' flim and instantly forgettable. I enjoyed it but largely left the cinema feeling underwhelmed. Teenage audience will love it however.

It's a bit like microwave meal. It does the job and fills the hole but it's not something you'd tell your mates about.

This thread is very upsetting if true. I cant claim to have been a hardcore fan throughout the years but I picked the book up about a year ago and its one of my favs. I've known for a couple of months that it wasn't going to have some things in it which would piss me off but I'm still looking forward to it. I dont think the pic in my sig will be in the film and if it is I doubt it will have the context it does in the book.

I'm heading into manchester now to watch it so we'll soon see. Whatever its like it could have been much worse:

yeh thought it was alright, enjoyable. missed a lot of stuff out that in the book makes the story so much better. then again it's a fucking long film as it is and it's quite a lot to take in. i'd heard that they'd changed the ending though? it seemed spot on to me, although there was no mention of alien invasion as i'm fairly sure there was in the book. jokes having "hallelujah" music over a sex scene haha
