Re: layering
IDK what science you wanna know...
You lay more then one sound on top of each other, eq em a bit n then put em through the same compressor n resample... Its all ears man, cant teach you much, just judge sounds by like 'The clicky part of this snare + the bass of this gunshot + the mid of this ride...'

Re: layering
Generally it's used to give a more full sound.
For example, take a lowend kick and a kick with a bit of snap, cut appropriately and layer, Bam, better sounding kick.
Similar things with snares, take a snare with a bit of attack, and another with a nice snap, cut and eq again, layer up etc.
Can be used for almost anything, just make sure your giving everything room to breathe.

Re: layering
If you're after some ideas to get you started, try the simplest form of duplicating a track, then having each copy of the track set to different frequencies etc... Listen and learn the principles of how notes combine and generate a new harmonic tone between them etc. That's a good way to get into the science of it allll
I'll type more later man, but currently some dickhead is wanking out some terrible beatles shite on an acoustic guitar. Mega irritating, especially on a day without cigarettes haha

Re: layering
Definately avoid textbooking things then... It's a fast way to end up with a hoarde of unappliable knowledge in my experience. You're aware of where the problems lie, so the best advice is to get stuck in and toy about with the settings you spoke of. Approach the situation with whatever basic knowledge you have, then tool it out from there, not with the intention of making it sound good, because it can lead to frustrating dreams... Better advice is to practice layering with the aim of it not sounding shit (in terms such as too muddy, clipping etc...).

Re: layering
The Youtubes have great tutorials with reason about how to layer sounds like bass. I find it hard to get tired of the "sounds in Reason" as Reasons synths cover suchs a wide pallette of sound, youd have to be a making music for a few thousand years to cover them!

breath of fresh air boys..alot of people have spoke to has allways sed that u should learn its sciences to almost hold a understandin on wot u are doin...most times i have tried to layer with 2 octaves (if that is the correct way of sayin it ) n really have not understood completly where im goin ..i.e. would start with a square octave for instance create a simple sound which was kind of thick then try n layer with a second square but neva seemed to find anything decent ..which then has inevitably caused frustration, it seems like sum sounds come with luk but im foreva askin does any actually know wot they are goin to make or how to direct the sound..very interestin stuff, with a hunger to know "!!!

Re: layering
IDK, phase and sub pan are known too have too be pretty heavily treated from what I understand before they can be thrown too wax or w/e... I guess depending on the tunes destiny, it can be fun, but, theres some serious horror stories and words of woe about cuttin that kinda stuff...nowaysj wrote:You can do it to your subs, don't trip.
N in theory, I produce everything as to the technical standard of vinyl, least try too, even if that not what im releasin on...

Re: layering
More than likely is the case with vinyl. I don't know, I don't release on any medium, so what the fuck do I know, but I've heard and made some interesting sub sounds using phase cancellation.
