what's your workflow like?

Post by back2onett » Mon Mar 22, 2010 6:07 pm

I've just been fucking around for a while not really doing much with my music so I just thought I'd ask about everyone's workflow and how you guys go about making your music

do you have set workflow for each of your tracks or is it more spontaneous just adding little bits here and there?

also how much work do you do within a week say?
How does I wobbled bass?

Usually I start with a drum beat, then muck around with some synths, then some percussion, then some more synths, then delete it all because it's shit, then some new stuff, then close it all and delete the project file because I'm pissed off with it.

Melody (1 keys 2 pads)
Drums (1 hats 2 snare 3 kick)

Sub (version A, version B) pure sine to get the notes and timing right
*copy, paste to new track*
Bass (version A, version B) click through my pre-made patches in massive until one sticks

This is assuming I get past the drums, I usually get hung up for days trying to be perfect, get frustrated and lose direction / inspiration for the tune.

Stem out a drum pattern, effect a bit, get rough levels, spend years designing bass patches I wont use and then even longer trying to figure out how I want to use them... Stem each bass sound, stem a sub... start chopping to shit to fit around the wierd syncopation n stuff in the rhythm that I didnt see was possible till they were waveform view... Throw in random sweeps/beeps/bips/donks/kapows, ect. as I think it might need, beat my head bloody off the nearest wall not being able to admit its done, cheese it to shit with some vocal samples (Wierd ones to, looney tunes, occasional murdeer scene from a horro movie, idk, depends on my mood)...

Fuck with master stuff, bounce, upload to the net, realize that while I was beating myself bloody there WAS in fact more I wanted to do, pull the tune like 6 times till I dont know what mixdowns are what...

Send like 3 people the wrong 320s... and then send them all the other ones, causing them to delete the files from cluttering.

Oh... and then I burn it to cd, and sit it on a stack with other stuff Ive made, but cant bring myself to mix since I made it.

starting with templates helps to not lose your inspiration

truth be told...

I write the tune (75% of it anyway) in my head before I start

otherwise it's just a normal studio wank-off

but the workflow goes

Drums
bass
samples
pads
everything else

usually just make the track in whatever order i'm inspired to... usually starts with a sub and drum pattern... i usually try to get one or two tracks done a week, and probably do 1-2 mixes as well

this is my work flow. i start out with drums, then add a bass then add synths and pads, then add effects, then tweak shit with effects to get a more interesting sound. that all usually ends up being 1-2 bars that just repeat themselves over and over. then i try and vary the song but everything either sounds way worse then the original or way better in which both cases i end up just saving the file and either quitting to go to something else or start a new file. my workflow is pathetic. i need to get organized. i want to be able to just sit and work on 1 tune untill its a finished product but this seems fucking impossible at times

Hey Basic, we both changed our avatars to arty black and white photos of ourselves!!

[EDIT] Err I reckon with a bit more effort I could have made that sentence sound even gayer.

Days of drum sessions making 16-32bar breaks then bounce them to a folder as idea loops.
Write a bass or synth melody from an idea and sound in my head or a sample I've found, audition drums loops over the top until one grooves with the bass or melody. (this can switch up depending how I'm feeling)
Get a basic structure and some variations of main parts, keyboard over the top with some harmonising elements, detail it up with sample fillers, blipij, earcandy etc.
Arrange. (never the same for each tune I hate template arrangements)
Mixdown.

drumz
pads/atmos/film score sample type shit.
bass
arrangement
drum edits
additional fx stabs risers etc.
additional mixing/arranging

this is the basis of how i do it, sometimes ill have a specific bass i wanna work around and iill do that before pads but most of the time the above is how it plays out.
