Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
Easy All,
I'm a Cubase 5 user, have been for many years now.
I have some hardware, Virus TI and a NI Maschine. I've been doing some research into Live as I keep reading more and more good stuff about it but I wanted to ask you guys, most of whom prob already run Live what you thought of it.
I hear its great for messing, got some great fx's and manglers but what else makes it so good?
Your thoughts?

Re: Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
I am a Cubase 5 & Ableton 8 user, at the moment I do 90% of my production in Cubase and live stuff in Live. The main reason for this is I am comfortable with Cubase but I can definitely say that Live offers a vast amount in the more instant gratification department.
Live does indeed come with a decent set of effects and it's also got a great level of integration and allows for some great experimental routing possibilities (building multitap effects with feedback loops in live itself is great fun) also with MaxForLive it becomes an infinitely flexible tool.
What they've kind of managed to do with Live is rather that create a sequencer with virtual instruments it make it feel more like the whole package is one big virtual instrument even though it contains different virtual instruments & plugins.
If you use Live like you would with any other sequencer then you'll appreciate some of the nice simplifications in work flow and may find it more fun to use and also as always you'll discover things which you are used to in cubase a bit more complicated or done differently. However if you use the "live" section for your production (certainly in conjunction with something like the APC40) you find it so much fun to use but it kinda depends on whether you like to work that way or not.
On the whole live has a vast amount to offer, it's certainly more than just a sequencer and some good effects and there's good reason more & more people are moving to it every day but on the other hand it may not be the thing for you.
My advice to you is don't ask any more questions about it, just go to ableton website, download the demo, run through the tutorials (will take you and evening) and spend a few days playing with it, try making a simple track if possible so you get to experience the process for all the things you normally do when making a track, if you get it a good test run (rather than briefly skimming the features) you'll know whether it's for you or not.
It's a fantastic piece of software but so is Cubase

Thats my thoughts I have to say!
Thing is I'm spending more time at my girls house (away form my studio) and I'm thinking about installing it on my laptop and having a mess as I've read its more geared towards messings around, remixing and so on..

Re: Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
live is great and i don't think i could work in another DAW ever again, but it's all about personal choice and if you know cubase well then do you really need to change?
it has functionality that makes it good for remixes etc... but i use it to produce everything, there are many different ways you can use it. the designers never meant for it to be a dj tool but people realised you could now loads of people use it to dj, have a play with the demo and see what you think...

Re: Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
ive bought c5 and abelton 8.
Ive used cubase for years, even on the atari, and heavily since the old VST5, SX1-3 and 5. Recently got the lite version of ableton with a controller and upgraded to the full. Only had a couple of months tho...
Ableton is brilliant for jamming, really flexible, and the more i use it the less i use cubase tbh. the mixer/mixing sucks and audio editing isnt as powerful but for a fun jam and getting ideas down, plus just being well thought out (little things like the way the sidechain routing works, bouncing out loops etc) means im thinking of dumping cubase... except for all the old cpr files i have. Abletons half the price as well...
Not finished any tunes yet in abelton tho tbh, and i do like the mixer in cubase far more than the fiddly lanes in ableton. but after so long on cubase im sure itll take a while to change over.

Re: Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
lol was just taking the piss, I use both
But seriously
As stated, Live is great for jamming out ideas, but if you're already proficient in banging ideas out quickly in Cubase, do you really need to change?
The one thing that is the clincher for me is audio editing, I do so much of my work in audio and Ableton just really gives me the shits when it comes to editing, which is why I'd never use it to write a full track. Sure, if I was willing to spend some time building up my chops in it then I could probably get a decent workflow going but I'd rather be writing tunes in something where I already have a great workflow in.
Bit of a stream of consciousness rant but something to think about nonetheless

Re: Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
Thanks guys for the responce.
I think I'm gonna go with a demo, load it on my laptop and then use it when I'm away from my studio so I can have a good old play with it and see what I think. I too work mainly in Audio as I have a lot of hardware and buonce all the time so I need my editing to be tight still. I'm very interested in the idea of queing your samples in the tempo of the track your working on mine you but again its a bit of give in one and take in the other!
I also know you can rewire whihc might be the end outcome for me...
Just I am a bit of a toy geek and Live has been raved about for a long time now and I feel like I'm missing out lol!

Yeah I think so too, best of both! I think its easy to feel left out when the buzz word is something you dont have! Thing is I've been a cubase user for years and years and really dont want to switch as I have a very quick workflow going atm plus I have a few bits of hardware and I really dont want to have to set them up again on a new DAW!
Hey boot I'm over your way in a few months! Well Starting in NZ for a week your then onto Syd! Any nights I should look out for?

Re: Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
Its really all about what allows you to make tunes comfortably. If you make tunes comfortably in Cubase why not stay in Cubase. Unless you just want to try something new, which can always lead to new things! I moved from Ableton to Logic because I wasn't really diggin Ableton's seqeuncer, and since i was on a mac I felt Logic might be a good way to go. So I just read a bunch of tutorials on Logic and played around with it for a few days, by making some little 8 bar loops and seeing how much i could do to em. It turned out to be a pretty useful when i sat down to actually make a tune, as I was some what familiar with it.
But all in all It really depends on how you work, and what works best for you. I definitely do feel like i have discovered a bunch of new was to do things using Logic.. but that was once i got over my laziness lol

hmmm, i find audio editing in ableton soo much easier than in cubaseboot wrote: The one thing that is the clincher for me is audio editing, I do so much of my work in audio and Ableton just really gives me the shits when it comes to editing, which is why I'd never use it to write a full track.

the big diff for me is the sample pool. i fucking hate that thing. is that still part of 5?? i use tons of samples so previewing in ableton is tits.
Re: Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
yeah I see all types of new controllers etc made specific for live and I think I am missing out too...dj $hy wrote:Yeah I think so too, best of both! but the way I see things...
build tunes in C5 and then DJ with 1200's and a laptop running Serato or Torq
keeps it simple

Ableton is a beast, Not really ever got on with Cubase myself so can't really comment, but should probably follow suit with the way most topics seem to go and add......
Ableton is the best ever and cubase is shit, no one elses opinions matter.

Re: Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
ableton is amazing, been using it for a good 3-4 years now. best feature is being able to bounce down to audio within the DAW its self, saves me so much time.
the time streching is super powerful aswell.
but yea one thing im not keen on is the mixer, can get a little confussing. im hoping in 9 they will add dual screen capabilities and having detachable windows so i can layout ableton arcoss 2 screen as i wish.

Re: Cubase Vs Albeton Live...Any users on here?
i use both........ i write my tunes mainly in ableton then mix them in cubase. i find ableton gives me more inspiration for sound design cos of the unusual plug ins it ships with and the clip envelope features amongst others. i prefer cubases bussing system for hierarchical bussing beyond one level and the mixer i find easier to work with, esp for the final mixdown. also means when i reach the limits of my comp in ableton, i then get a new lease of life by stemming and whacking in cubase, ableton seems really quick for bouncing lots of stems... can also help to give a new perspective on teh tune 'cos my workflow is so diffferent in both progs....... think im gonna stick with this method for a while at least
