On the flip side... i do wonder if the piracy is actually a great device for marketing yourself to a shit load of people. I think it's pretty hard to make money of selling tracks, so perhaps the money 'lost' (would they have been a sale anyways?) is better 'spent' by getting your music in front of millions of people who wouldn't have bought it anyways.

Depends on if you want to make money for the track. A remix I made has appeared on various obscure filesharing type sites but there's nothing I can do because I can't make any commercial gain from it anyway, it being an unoffical remix. So in this way the publicity, however small, is "good". On the other hand should I ever make a track that is about to be released/has been released and it was leaked all over the place I'd really be severely hacked off.

True.

At the end of the day it's going to happen regardless. It would appear that someone buys the track as soon as it's released and it ends up in giant torrent packs from Russia. Fuck knows how this works - maybe they have someone on the inside handing out new releases? Def think there can be methods to use this to your advantage such as doing an obscure edit and zip it up with a txt file about you and seed it yourself (anonymously of course!) for example. I'm sure some 'big' band will at some point release an album via torrent if it's not already been done yet.

In my first ever track i released i used a sample of Madonna - when the album she released at the time was put out her label put out a load of fakes on download and torrent sites. When you opened the file it was some audio of her saying "what the fuck are you doing" or something along those lines... anyways - it ended up in the track

haha. I don't know how it works, I do know that when I uploaded the track in question to youtube I was getting lots of notifications on the google alert I'd set up for it.

I'm working on a tutorial on how to watermark your tunes without any fancy software (just using Wavlab) to send to other persons on my label(s)

If any artists/labels are interested in this email me pkay000@gmail.com and I"ll hit you with the video once im finished.

I'd rather not publicly post this personal method of watermarking as it could aid in defeating the watermark, but will gladly share it with artists/labels who i can identify

I know a DnB DJ who absolutely delights in spreading the pre-release and promo tracks he gets sent amongst his friends. Some people are just whores I'm afraid...

That means it's been leaked by someone whom you gave the song to ! Check to see if you can remember who you gave the song out to...?

One more thing, did they not ask you to prove you were Depone...? and how did you prove that?

Most probably "Съб Суара" or "Саб Суара" or "~ Свара", depends on how you choose to write it. :)

Nice idea for a thread Depone, will have a look through the template!

I do however see a few hypocrites (mentioning no names, but you know who you are) who have a problem with people pirating the work that they put effort into, but have no problem pirating the DAW's and synths they used to create their work. If you pirate to create your track, don't complain when it gets pirated. Simples.

Really appreciate this Depone! Countless times i've found our releases on all these download sites.

At the moment though i feel its worth more in promotion than it is in sales! But big big up for sharing this!

Well I think the people who go out of their way to find releases on usenet or irc, or who have access to FTPs really had no intention of buying the music anyway. What's good about getting music removed from filesharing sites is that it does help stop people who are just looking for the music on search engines like google. I'm sure you know if you type a song name into google the first page is usually always filled with rapidsearch sites, or even straight up mediafire links to download it. The person seeing those links might have been searching google to buy it, but if a download pops right up on google, the chances of them buying it lessen a great deal.
