Anyone used Akai MPK Mini or MPK25?

Post by Bass Music » Thu Oct 28, 2010 3:28 pm

Hello guys,
was wondering if any of you have used the Akai MPK mini as I can't find any reviews?
Also looking at the MPK25 but not sure if I'd need it...
I after something portable that I can edit parameters on the fly with whilst playing...kinda like this guy is doing:

Thinking of getting Korg Legacy software for Logic so I should be able to do something similar right?

any opinions/info will be much appreciated!
cheers :e:

I've got one as well due to my small desk space, and I absolutely love it. Dubstep doesn't generally use epic scales so the 2 octaves you have on the keyboard are usually more than enough. Add to that the numerous banks of pads and knobs for on-the-fly automation and you have a mean midi controller for music production. The keys are also very nicely weighted, they don't feel cheap. Really nice unit.

Been thinking of getting an MPK25 for ages now, everything I've heard is good. Might try and get a wee shot of one some time before I splash the cash.

What are the pads like on it? Get use out of them or do you end up not using em?

Don't have any kit but fancy getting some, pretty much set on the mpk25 but thought of the Novation Xiosynth, purely because of the fact it acts as an interface as well, as a money saver. But who knows.

Sorry dude, I'm hijacking your thread here haha.

i have an mpk25 as well, and can't find too much wrong with it. i will advise you though, that if u want it for gigging, then perhaps look elsewhere... the model is the heaviest fucking piece of kit i own. really crazy bc other 25 keys i have had in the past dont weigh near as much as this damn thing.

Anyone got any more opinions on the MPK Mini? My budget is minimal and it seems like the best piece of cheap kit to go for with a variety of controls - hopefully I'll have a few quid post-christmas to get one...

Any feedback on experiences using it with Ableton would be particularly welcome.

I'm getting one. I currently use an Edriol PCR 300 for gigs mapped to Ableton. This seems to be a far better option for me and the way I have my setup running for shows.

The PCR is too big for most situations now, with the pads triggering clips. Pots on FX and the keys labeled and mapped to one hits and FX. The Akai can be setup the same way and is small, cheap enough to replace if I kill it and portable enough for gigs and more importantly flights. Perfect imo.

I'm also currently trying to chose between the 25 and the mini. The biggest gripe that I've heard about the mini is that the keys are not only small but feel pretty cheap. Thoughts?

For the price, you can't go wrong with the MPK Mini. I picked one up a couple months ago and I love it. Serves me well and is very portable. The only problems are the keys are small but it's a compact controller so that's to be expected. There's no weight on the keys at all so there's some resistance when pushing them down so the velocity sensing isn't always up to par. Then the knobs are short. I feel those are obvious things that come with choosing a compact controller. In the end, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and it's Akai so you know it's solid.

I'm yet another MPK25 user, picked mine up about 6months ago for around $350 AUD (roughly equal to the $US at the moment) havn't looked at a new controller since. If its within your budget I highly suggest this piece and would go as far to say its the best available for its price bracket, at least for dubstep production/medium live usage.
Although it is a hefty piece of equipment and have bin hit up multiple times at airports, so if it is primarily for live shows I would probably suggest the MPK mini.

I have an mpk35.
it's pretty decent, I wasn't super happy with the pads so i modded them, and now they're ok.
overall the controller is worth the money.

I'm so happy with my mpk mini, I use it all the time. I also have an FCB1010, APC40, Axiom 49, and Korg NanoKontrol. I use the MPK Mini more than any of the other ones now. It's great for producing as I don't have to be at my desk where everything else is set up, so portable, and so many options. You can have 4 presets of everything, and 2 banks of pads per preset as well. It rocks, and for 100 bucks, you really can't beat it. I do like the keys on my Axiom 49 and the pitch wheel/modwheel a lot, but that's not nearly as portable.
