Exotic Scales

Post by Mammoth » Wed Aug 17, 2011 10:28 pm

Does anybody else use these?
These are a nice change to using the same major minor melodies and can add some funky elements to your music.

Ex: Jewish Scale: 1 2b 3 4 5 6b 7b
Very cool Arabian kind of feeling to it.

Hungarian Minor: 1 2 3b 4# 5 6b
Dark evil sounding.

It: visually shows which keys to use, gives you a play button so you can hear it, lists the key info, and lists compatible chords. Result.

The 'Jewish Scale' is actually the Phrygian Dominant mode, i use it quite a lot, it's very prodigy-like.

Modes open up a load of possibilities for melodic ideas, the Locrian is good for really dark stuff and the Lydian is good for weird jazzy stuff :)

The numbers are the degrees of the scale.

Ok, so every scale is derived from the Major Scale. For example, the C Major Scale is C D E F G A B C. The Major Scale's degrees are 1 2 3 4 5 6 7, then back to the 1 which is the root note. So for example in the C Major Scale, the 2 (or the second degree) is a D. the 6 is an A, etc.

So now, if you read the OP where it says "Jewish Scale", it says it is a 1 2b 3 4 5 6b 7b. That means that if you played the Jewish Scale in the key of C, it would be C Db E F G Ab Bb.

Yurrrrr mehhhhh.

I really just don't like their vocals. And it's not because I don't like metal or don't understand metal vocals, it's just that their vocals suck. Really bad. I rather listen to Amon Amarth or some shit.

I just listen to the guitar/bass work mostly.
Amon Amarth kills it every time though. seen em twice
