Stepping up my Dj'ing

Post by invisibled » Fri Dec 16, 2011 7:19 pm

Hey All,

I'm making weekly mixes to promote my music, it's fun, but i want to up my game a bit. I use Traktor with a vestax vci-100, i'm not a dj but love producing music, so I just bought a setup that works for me, and am actually enjoying it.

So what i'm looking for is just some tips on how to up my skills when playing a set. I can basically keep the beat going and mix tunes together, used some effects but idk how often do people really use effects? or, are there some cool ways you use fx? I don't really know much about DJ'ing, just what i've learnt from some DJ 101 videos hah.

Any suggestions, tips etc would be great! Here is my last mix

thanks all!

people who use fx have small dicks, u should be able to sell ur mixes on:

1) track selection
2) timing/programming of track selection

alone, otherwise ur crap and should give up, no amount of tricks can get past those simple truths...

Works if you do it right. Maybe I'm not explaining it right though :D

(watching getdarker sets won't make you better at using effects in a dj set btw)

This +1

My friend has all the extra shit to go with his decks
Samplers
FX etc

But i just show him up on decks alone

My advice is forget about FX for the time being and just study the songs your gonna be mixing,
because some tunes drop after 16 bars but others go into the breakdown first so you need to know what the tune is going to do next so you don't get any nasty surprise's.

watch some youtube tutorials on basics then try and create a mix you enjoy the sound of. Don't get why your curious how many effects people use; what if effects they use sound shit to you? Develop your own style, practise and have fun doing it.

flawless mixes between great tunes that destroy a dancefloor is the height of DJing. Live sets are a different story entirely, but for DJing- back to the basics: bring great music, play it really well, at the right time. anticipate what the audience is going to want in your own way. that's it.

ie,

of course, as always, being in Berlin makes it easier.

Cool, thanks to those who responded with a real answer haha. I'll just keep on jamming with the tunes, I'm good with track selection, music is my life, i do it everyday all day in various forms, so i found creating playlists and stuff for my mixes was easy. The transitions between songs is getting there, I am getting more of a natural feel for songs and when i should bring in the next one. I've been also trying to not look at traktor when i play, just to make it harder.

As for FX all i really ment was like filters and stuff. I like playing with the loop and effecting one track, maybe playing with delay or something and then bringing in another track that has just drums or something and mixing the two together. I like using the beatmasher, and believe it can be used right, without being gay about it haha.

In any event, thanks for the discussion ya'll :)
