Shouldn't this be named...

"The what I have downloaded illegally and use occasionally thread!"

OPs synths alone come to around 1030 all together.

The waves plugins coming in at 1150.

Melodyne is 400 / Ozone 250/999 (depending on what version..)

So lets just guestimate around 4000ish on plugins in alone.

Deep pockets.

------------------------

On subject though..

I use Sylenth1, Reaktor, S(M)exoscope, Modern Exciter and analogue delay.

Rest is native fruity.

Honestly, I'm not really sure yet. My ears can't notice the difference yet like they can with the different compressors, but I love the simplicity of three knobs and how it's light on the card processing power. Can't wait to try a reverb and maybe the maximizer as soon as I get the money. Nice to meet another Studio One 2 user by the way.

Ive always loved that classic Neve sound so i was just wondering how that stacked up.

I love S1 2. Ive tried Ableton, Fl, reaper, Etc. and in comparison it just clicks. The fact that its a new DAW thats getting constant updates is great imo. Plus free Melodyne and that new Softube distortion. Cant be beat.

Not necessarily. A 199$ Plug-in here or there is not a big deal, you just have to compromise somewhere else. Don't buy a new pair of jeans. Don't buy that new pair of shoes. Wear your busted clothing a few more weeks/months & go ahead & buy that nice Reverb you want... It just comes down to what you want more.

Where do your sounds come from?

Post by Alan X » Thu Dec 27, 2012 8:52 pm

There's probably a post somewhere about this but I couldn't' find one. I am interested to hear what software people are using and what people use for different elements of their songs. Here are mine, generally speaking:
DAW: Ableton, Reason, Sonar (recording mostly)
Drums: Mostly samples + effects, loops, and occasionally made using Reason or Ableton's operator
Lead Synth: Almost always made using various tools on Ableton, occasional samples, occasional VST synths (Sylenth, Massive - actually goodfor more than just wobs!, Albino, etc), occasional use of Reason
Bass: Usually I use Ableton's Operator to create the sub frequencies, and then Operator or other ableton tools and the occasional VST to create the midrange bass. I often group the two or use macros to make it sound like one unified sound.
Pads/background noise: About 50/50 between samples + effects and using Ableton tools (operator, analog, electric, etc)
Vocals: If I have any, they're usually acapella samples or random stuff I find lurking on the internet. I will often effect vocals or run them through a vocoder
Incidentals: By this I mean any little random noises you hear in songs (think Burial). More samples, sometimes if am going for something specific I will design a sound using Operator.
Real Instruments: If I have any, they are usually samples. I haven't had much luck with synthesized instruments, and I don't have Kontakt.

As you can see, I'm an Ableton whore :cornlol: I would like to hear from all types of producers, I look forward to your answers!

Good to know, i was checking out Saturn as well. I got a few things on my Christmas list, lol. One thing i need for sure is a multiband distortion plugin. Its a toss up between Saturn and Ohmicide, but I am leaning toward Saturn because every tutorial i watch on Ohmicide is basically, "turn knobs till it sounds good". I haven't seen one video that really explains what is happening.
IMHO Saturn puts Ohmicide to shame. The problem for me is that after a couple of tweaks Ohmicide seems to fly off the handle and grind up anything to the point of nonsense, harsh, gross, static, noise... yuck. Too much for me...

The thing about Saturn and pretty much any fab plugin that amazes me is that no matter how extreme, it somehow sounds good. All of the fabfilter plugins just have a knack for sounding musical, even when pushed to the very limit. Volcano and Micro's filters practically sing, Saturn makes things sound crunchy and warm even when slammed, Pro-C can pump really musically. In the end it might not sound right for the particular song you're working on, but nothing coming out of a fab plugin ever sounds 'bad'. That's why I use Pro-Q for very extreme EQ'ing.

Jeez, I sound like a fanboi.
Interesting, I am in need of another eq as well. Ableton's stock eq barely cuts it (that's a pun), i always use an auto filter in conjunction just to be safe. I usually have crazy eqing as well, i might have 2-3 synths that need to sit well with each other so ill shape one synth around what the other synth is putting out.

From the videos I saw on Saturn, it looked great and i would agree. You can really push it to the extreme without compromising the sound.
pro-q is a beast!
^ I second that... I love Pro-Q
