@Jizz,
If you choose to go for the 404sx, i'd say the filter in there will have you covered for some time. It sounds good to me.
The reverb is sorta ok... I dunno, if you use this kind of hardware, you're probably not into super polished verbs anyway ;-)

Like any other sampler its about what you put in it.
Just try and stay off the djfx looper thing all the time and you'll be good 8)

If you want a mpc you should get one that has JJOS. Like the 1000 or the 2500.

Just checked, $73.

And btw, not getting emails from posts, so just went back through this thread, I missed a lot of posts that I'd of liked to respond to. My bad.

Are any of you still receiving emails when someone posts in a thread you've posted in? Lemme know, I'll be back in two days to check for an answer.

Na forget jjos, dont wanna be learning a whole new OS

Hows the integration with a daw like ableton? With the 404 and especially volca sample that seems to be a negative for quite a few people

o_O ;; what kind of integration? I mean...the basics of both are you'll be able to sync tempo and transport via MIDI and record sequences into Ableton. AFAIK neither offer audio over USB or anything like that...

Hardware is hardware man...either dive in head first and deal with the "limitations" or stay out of the deep end ;-)

What MPC are you used to?

You're missing the plot Jizz, on the Sample and 404. From the things you're saying, I think a PadKontrol and ableton are your best bet.

Can't you borrow one from someone for a bit maybe, jizz?

Try it out.

im that kid again :cornlol:

alright, i should say ive worked with a sp-404 and ableton before (https://soundcloud.com/relka/funk-everywhere) it was actually pretty fun. i dunno why i asked that question tbh, just looking to cover all angles before i go ahead and buy this

like with the volca sample, i heard that its just one midi out which mans are saying is a bad thing and that makes me think ok, am i messing up here

ok lemme break this down; I'm not looking for that Launchpad kind of thing, im not looking for a controller. I'm looking for something that can fuck sound up. dont care if its a bit tricky to get the sounds into ableton either, as long as i can mangle the sounds to my heart's content I'm happy :corndance:

im not used to any mpc, this is gonna be my first hardware purchase

The volca sample has no midi outs. It has one midi in. A midi in is very helpful in that it allows the sampler to function as a sampler, you can play samples from your keyboard/daw - BUT each sample is on a different midi channel, 1-10, from what I can tell. Easy from daw, harder on keyboard, have to be able to send omni, BUT! The nice thing about the Sample is its sequencer. Very easy and very fast to get dope beats going, with interesting sounds, and sounds moving in time. You pretty much are relying on pitch shifting in a grainy way samples, in time. There is a reverb effect. It is limited as hell. There are not muli-outs, which is the biggest limitation from my point of view.

The 404 is similar - it has one midi in, no midi out. I've never triggered it from keyboard or daw (that I can recall). I play resampled beats on it primarily - so, resample to a pad, then play a basic layer of the beat onto that pad, then resample onto another pad, playing that first resampled pad now with other elements. So on and so forth. This is the microwave workflow. No sequencer involved.

The 404 is definitely a more accomplished machine - it has a host of awesome real time playable fx.

If I had to choose one, defo the 404, but the Sample is very beasty and costs next to nothing for what you get.

You can mangle in both. I think you like to work with longer passages, phrases and what not, so the 404 is probably a better bet. You're not going to be able to load the sample with phrases, like chord progressions or arp'ed progressions, there just isn't enough memory. The 404 gives you a greater range of sound fuckupage. Just the Sample is fast and creates a great texture when pitch shifting, and has a fun fast sequencer.

So don't diss jjos. jjos is a hacked operating system for certain mpc's. They generally benefit from jjos, it just rounds off the rough edges in the workflow.

There isn't much you can do with a 500. If you were going to go mpc, I'd say either 1000 or 2500. Best thing about the 2500 is the ability to control other gear. The 2500 can work as a real daw and an alternative to the computer. The 1000 can as well, but its only got 2 midi outs to the 2500's 4, unless I'm tripping.

I don't think the MPC's represent a greater value than the 404. There is a reason the beat scene was more skewed to the 404 than mpc's. Much greater fx and abstraction on the 404. I owned a 2500 for a while, it was dope, but it didn't stick with me. I sleep with my 404 under my pillow at night (right next to my nine).
