Re: DSF: APPLIED MINIMALISM IV
nice!
gonna try to find some time between the exams
the sample is sounding good, should be interesting!

Re: DSF: APPLIED MINIMALISM IV

Um, took a waaaaay longer lunch break than I should've and totally busted out something I'm loving right now. Whoa.

Re: DSF: APPLIED MINIMALISM IV
not spent much time producing this year what with my new 60 hr week job but this seems too much fun to pass up on. Count me in.
Re: DSF: APPLIED MINIMALISM IV
yeah. this contest turns the shit outa my sample manipulation ability.
i'll be in.
i'll be in.

And... I'm... Done.

Re: DSF: APPLIED MINIMALISM IV
nice one those who entered; i only have 2 entries tho so ill leave it another bit if anyone else think theyll have something to submit?
Re: DSF: APPLIED MINIMALISM IV
Cool i have something almost finished as well so that'll be 4 entries woooo
Re: DSF: APPLIED MINIMALISM IV *Voting open*
OK, no joke... WOW.
Every single tune here is kind of a stunner, tbh. Much more so than the recent samplepack contests even, I'd say. Such a mixed bag stylistically too. This is the hardest voting decision I think I've ever had to make. I like them all, a lot.
BIG UP THE PRODUCTION CONTEST FAM.

YEah big up all the entries, we've all got quite decent at this minimalism thing i think. Voted for the last entry, IV; sounds like it'd fit neatly on the recent Akkord or Samurai Horo albums.
I think this is the last Applied Minimalism comp I'll do: theres only about 4/5 of us who are interested in it tbf, so the competition form doesn't really work. It'll prob be better to just leave this thread for if anyone wants to post an AM track they made, get feedback, share ideas/techniques etc.
With that in mind when this finishes I'd love to hear how you got some of those sounds, & if anyone wants to ask about how I made anything on my tune I'm happy to explain.

Re: DSF: APPLIED MINIMALISM Winner = Armature
ah wow, thanks for the votes guys. voted for track 3 myself - compositionally, i think it's a fair bit stronger than my entry. well done to all 3 entries though.
i'd be happy to talk about what went into the sound design although my process is fairly destructive so i don't have every step of it documented.

Yeah big up, your track is the best AM entry i've heard and the best entry for any DSF comp in a while imo.armature wrote:ah wow, thanks for the votes guys. voted for track 3 myself - compositionally, i think it's a fair bit stronger than my entry. well done to all 3 entries though.

I've a bunch of questions so feel free to answer or not answer whichever u like;
How u get that sort of fluttering reece sound @ about 1.10?,
I'm guessing the clap is a 2 snares layered to get a flam and then resampled?
Any suggestions on that evil bassline that comes in @ 1.45?
and, tips on getting such a loud, clean mixdown?
I know there has to be a hell of a lot of resampling going on for even simple sounds so no worries ifs too elaborate to explain.
Mine was the Juke/footwork track (III), was yours I or II?alphacat wrote: Which one was yours?
Re: DSF: APPLIED MINIMALISM Winner = Armature
the fluttering reece is just the evil bass line low passed iirc. i got fairly lucky with that reece sound honestly, i think it was a tail resampled off the bass groove and then distorted in ohmicide. i remember freezing and flattening the track and then thinking i'd regret doing that further down the line.
the fluttering comes from ableton's frequency shifter set to ring mode and the frequency pulled down single digit hz (and then automated with a slight upwards ramp) and the dry/wet pulled back. the fluttery bits are also layered - duplicated twice, panned a left and right, bass eq'd out, and i think i just used a bit of overdrive on different frequencies to differentiate them and create stereo. then all three tracks grouped, reverbed, m/s eq'd to clean up the sides. the whole thing eventually gets another pitched up version of itself over the top as well.
the claps are from a noisy tail that was created along the way. stuck in a sampler, band passed, snare type envelope, and then played by three very rapid midi notes (tone and a semi-tone apart) - i turned the grid off for these but they're roughly 32nd notes apart on the triplet grid. then a similar process as above (+ shifted ever so slightly on the grid) to create a bit of width.
i have a tendency to mixdown as i go along (which usually comes back to bite me in the ass later): usually sharp hi-pass cuts as far as i can push them without compromising too much on the sound's character - i'm trying to tone back on this personally with a less severe cut to the bass/sub coupled with a low-shelf a little higher up to compensate. slight boosts after cutting if necessary, to separate things in a similar frequency space (+ i have a thing for unnecessarily boosting the sides) ; mild sidechain compression as well if the elements interact once in awhile.
there's quite a bit of distortion involved along the way when creating the elements which leads to the loudness as well i think. i did stick this through ozone for a very dirty master so that contributes to some of the loudness as well.
i'm pretty sure a lot of what i've said up there is technically bad practice so take it with a grain of salt
edit: yikes, wall of text. sorry about that, i tend to ramble a bit.

#4 is a fucking monster. That being said, 3 is very good too imo. think the production on 4 impresses me the most. Infinite bigups for that.
