Re: Alright Newbies, Ask A Question
big up
urm, probably a basic question but been doing a lot of resampling in ableton, this stuff all pops up in abletons sample folder not my own, this i can work with, but when i open a new project they're not there, but when im in a current project with resampled stuff everything i've ever resampled is in the ableton samples folder??

Re: Alright Newbies, Ask A Question
Did kingnaya tell you how to make a bassline bass?
Just get 2 or 3 organy waveforms, detune two, and put the up in octaves, try 3. Envelope the filter, try different filter slopes for the right kind of cutoff that you want. Half of it, is the kind of bassline progression, so the notes you play and the way notes slide or don't slide into each other.

re this question ^ I don't know what the f you're talking about, sounded like you just wrote ableton folder ableton folder over and over again. Can you drag and drop you samples into your library?

Re: Alright Newbies, Ask A Question
Two questions:
1) In my productions I find myself making drum beats that sound improvised. Is it good or bad to make every couple of bars different from the previous or should I just loop one bar over and over.
2) When adding a sample before a drop should I wait until the sample is finished and resume the drop as if it was muted during the sample or should I just resume as if it just started.

try making a 1 bar loop that has the basic pattern you want, so if its a 2step get the samples and programming sounding "right" to you (hats shuffling nicely, nice feel between kick snare loop)
then copy it 4 times, (bars) and loop whilst you change them round to be interesting, adding kicks, snares, hats, general percussion its quite a nice feel when the second and fourth are similar, there should be a clear loop so you can hear the start of each 4 bars (sounds good and also makes mixing way easier). Personally i then copy it out to a whole phase and then make small edits that you dont quite notice but make it feel slighly less repetitive, seeminly random percussive hits with reverb etc.
Guys like Epoch seem to edit it heavily so things don't seem to loop at all, whilst with most its clearly a loop with edits- just depends on the aesthetic you want.
then obviously switch up the beat after 16 bars (usually) can be as simple as taking out or adding something.
adding a sample before the drop is effective & hugely over used method of building up the vibe, there is no right way to do it and it depends on what you want to achieve, Mala usually puts on a massive delay which is still audible for 8 bars+ into the drop. its pretty effective to go straight from sample (dryish) into the drop (Kahn does this a lot) or just a pause before a drop. be creative otherwise your tune will sound deadout.dansci wrote:2) When adding a sample before a drop should I wait until the sample is finished and resume the drop as if it was muted during the sample or should I just resume as if it just started.
For dubstep tunes i personally send samples to a channel with lots of dubby delay, but automate the volume to cut out slowly to the drop and stay barely audible - can also then eq out frequencies that are used a lot in the "drop" (see where you perc and bass is on a spectrum and just take out those freq) so you get some atmosphere but doesn't make everything muddy.
If its brostep you wana make just make a 1 loop vengeance kick>hat hat>15khz peaking snare> hat hat>> and move on

Re: Alright Newbies, Ask A Question
If you make a 15Khz peaking brostep snare, that would be cool. Well not cool to your ears, but at least it would be something new.Lye_Form wrote:nowaysj wrote:FINALLY! After all these years! Nah, just make some tiny fade-ins to their fingers & toes & tune your snare to the key of the crowd, and they both can stay in the room.hubb wrote:sidechain the crowd so there's room for my snare, you say ?

Re: Alright Newbies, Ask A Question
Depends on artist. People who use 909s (Skrillex for example) have their snares hitting usually at 200Hz, since most 909s already peak at 200Hz. Some have their snare sitting at exactly an octave above the kick, which is tuned to the root note of the song and are much lower because of that. Some Knife Party songs have the snare hitting low as 160Hz, while kick is at 80Hz and sub around 40Hz. And then, some people just stick with overprocessed vengeance samples and sidechain everything to it without caring much about where the snare hits (probably somewhere between 150-250Hz).Lye_Form wrote:lol where do brostep snares peak anyway?_Agu_ wrote:If you make a 15Khz peaking brostep snare, that would be cool. Peraonally, I like having my drums set up in octaves like I explained above, exact frequencies depending on the key of the track. It's so much easier to have triangle or square wave sub then, since the 2nd harmonic automatically ends up being in between of the kick and the snare unless you play some really high/low notes. Much less sidechaining needed and no weird shit happening like kick/snare phasing with the sub.
Oh and about the high end, most brostep snares have pretty flat high end, and starts to roll off around 10-12Khz, no peaks at 15Khz

EDIT:
Played at high volume on a proper system (nightclubs etc.) they don't really sound that much anything, you just get hit in the chest everytime the snare hits. Don't know if it's good or bad (in general, I personally like heavy snares), but trying to add some clappy Eskmo-style snare with a lots of character or 500Hz amen break snare in the mix where you have the whole midrange filled with other synths is a nightmare. I can guarantee that if brostep snares sounds shit now, they would sound even more shit if they were less brosteppy midrange snares that disappear in a mix with lots of growls/other midrange crap going on. Same way as if you have a fat dnb reese filling the whole bass region and low midrange, adding brostep snare the would sound complete crap.they sound fucking horrible.
Re: Alright Newbies, Ask A Question
All of that is dependant on very strict arrangement. So it has to be noted that it's the most mainstream bits that are the most guilty. And down the line the lack of ideas that instate those as 'rules'. But yeah isn't knife party pendulum?
