Re: Less than amateur producers...assemble!
Oh hai. Cliche, but practice makes perfect. And ALLOW the production forum it's a gold mine for hints and tips.
Re: Less than amateur producers...assemble!
tbh i started like this:
first time i began producing more seriously about 3 years ago, together with a good friend we set up a little studio in the basement of his flat... we downloaded a cracked FL studio version and imho you learn a shitload concerning synthesis, on FL! so we just were jamming for over a year without reading a manual or anything - buti learned most in thiss one year.
the concept of learning by doing.
then we both bought ableton live 8 and a proper copy of FL. and I started taking it more seriously (and that was about the time i came here, to dsf). i started reading the (great) ableton manual, started asking other producers for tips and tricks, started producing rather than 'experimenting'....
now i think i can say, i know what i am doing, everything i do isn't just an aimeless knob-turning...
yeah - i think that is one way to roll.
it helped me most - just give enough time for experimenting, playing around and getting the feel for it - then advance to the proper techniques and theory of music production.

Re: Less than amateur producers...assemble!
a question for the veterans:
how many drum samples do you regularly use? do you have some sort of favourites-folder with a couple hits you always use?
i'm asking because i just had a great idea for a groove, needed some really low congas (or whatever you call them, like in pinch's qawwali for example) and after 10 minutes of clicking through folders i completely lost my vibe.
i mean do i really *need* so many samples? i don't know whats worse, not having a drumsound on your hdd or never finding it in between all the rubbish

C) know your folders/samples

Re: Less than amateur producers...assemble!
I have thousands. Obviously I haven't used all of them, but I find it reassuring that if I need it, it's most likely there somewhere. I can usually find something I like within a few minutes of searching. Never underestimate the power of layering!hasezwei wrote:a question for the veterans:

The congas on Qawwali sound like an 808 tom to me btw.

^^ All this ^^
Also, if you're scanning through a folder and find a drum sample you like, open it up in a sample editor (for example, Edison in FL), then resave it into 'Favourite Drums' folder. You'll build up a folder of go-to sounds that you can access from the beginning to get a project moving without finding the perfect kick snare combo (that bit can come later)

On DOA a few years ago people got together and did a big mix like that, a bunch of ~1 minute loops. It was pretty cool.
