saw Lucy twice and found his selection a bit... meh? 2hrs of the same efficient german boomy big room bass drum somehow kills my vibe. sounds all a bit overproduced, "who gets the most berghain-sounding kick". same reason I'm not too fussed with Stroboscopic Artefacts...phane wrote: Lucy does the same trick to me as well

Re: the techno thread
yeah i get that vibe from stroboscopic as well. generally not a fan of overproduced music. specially when it comes to techno. the label's more experimental stuff is good tho
Re: the techno thread
some of it is good, but there are hardly any releases which I find appealing start to finish... on every plate I'll find two forgettable tunes. Forbidden Planet is another label that has a strong aesthetic but often enough just isn't "quite" there. most of their releases don't make it past the solid mark. they have released some interesting music though and not nearly as corny as SA's stuff.
btw. I've grown fond of the Rhythmic Theory plate on Ancient Monarchy. late-night bangers.

Re: the techno thread
imo dadub's output is the best on the label.
Re: the techno thread
I like the Rrose remix of Dadub's Life. didn't cop it though, mainly because even the best cut (the Rrose remix) isn't exactly essential.
edit - the Stellate series had some really good moments.

Re: the techno thread
They are the twins from the Shining I think.
Eomac and Lakker have stuff out on SA that I wouldn't want to have missed.
I also enjoyed the remixes of Lucy's album.
This was just released, but it sounds like a late 90s jam. Nice synths.

I'd love a compilation of Monnom's B2-sides...

Re: the techno thread
worth seeing
Re: the techno thread
safe safe, had a mate say he'd seen him and it was on the aggressive doof doof end
but tbh i'd rather go see something memorably aggressive if i'm going out to techno
also it's in a disused police station which is always sick

Re: the techno thread
One of the best sets I heard was James Ruskin following Sandwell District.
Probably about 4 years back though.
Honestly I've heard people say the same thing your mate said, but about Inigo Kennedy.
Often I've found the sound in really big venues or tents is just not up to the task and it'll
all sound like nothing but kick drums. But yeah.. it's going to be bangers if he plays
a late slot.

No, but it could sound like that to people when the system is sub par.
He doesn't exactly play the straight forward 4x4 stuff.

Re: the techno thread
surprised to hear this, most forbidden planet releases have been at least 7/10 in my bookjrkhnds wrote:Forbidden Planet is another label that has a strong aesthetic but often enough just isn't "quite" there. most of their releases don't make it past the solid mark. they have released some interesting music though and not nearly as corny as SA's stuff.
Re: the techno thread
I really like the Breaker and Annanan releases, but the other ones are somewhat lacking... They sound like they were trying so really hard to hit that melodic lofi aesthetic that it kinda falls short. Still, the label's output is much better than a lot of other stuff around at the moment.
