just trying to introduce some next level deep thought to these Q&A's...
in that case...

A fat man leading a group of people out of a cave on a coast is stuck in the mouth of that cave. In a short time high tide will be upon them, and unless he is unstuck, they will all be drowned except the fat man, whose head is out of the cave. [But, fortunately, or unfortunately, someone has with him a stick of dynamite.] There seems no way to get the fat man loose without using [that] dynamite which will inevitably kill him; but if they do not use it everyone will drown. What should they do?
Why not blow a hole in the wall of the cave? or is that too obvious?

Please stop with the nonsense.

On topic: I'm interested in hearing about the nightvision filtering too :)

Rendr wrote:Wicked! Your Repercussions album is sick, especially the Radical & Battle Sequence tunes. Just a few generic questions...

1) When did you start making music, and what got you interested?

2) Are there any special effects and processes you tend to apply to you dark reece style basses like the tune radical?

3) How long on average do you spend on making a track?
Music has always been around me, my Dad was a record dealer and was constantly playing tracks throughout the day. Some Elvis, Moody Blues, just loads of random stuff.

I was 14 when I joined my first band and started writing riffs back then.

Funnily enough Radical is probably the only tune where I didnt add that many effects. I made the bass sound in Albino and I may have had a flange on top.

Every track is different, recently I have been able to write tunes a lot quicker but I think its down to experience, I know how to do all the things I want to do now, where as previously I would have to spent a lot of time experimenting. Some tracks have taken me 3 months to finish others 4 hours.

Is the guitar-driven tunes you playing and a recording real guitar or do you use a VST or synth patch?

Whats your favourite track you've made and why?

You've worked quite closely with Cyrus(another one of my favourite producers) recently haven't you? How have your two creative processes complimented eachother?

Who do you respect in the world of Dubstep?

Have you ever looked to film scores for inspration? I get that feel from a lot your tracks, they have that epic essence!

Will you be making dubstep or whatever it evolves into for a long time or are you looking forward to other projects, maybe more tradition style of music making?
Only a few tracks have me playing the guitar in, Headstrung, My demons, Cella, and No Sunshine. Its mainly Vsti's with Distortion and other effects .

One of my favourite tracks is Cella on My Demons, its was the first track I played guitar on and i just love the mood of it.

The whole track has a nice warm organic feel about it. Some people accused me of recording a live drummer but its all programmed.

Yeah ive done two tracks with Cyrus, I think we both like quite similar sounds. We appreciate the very deep to the very heavy and dark beats.

I cant really answer that question because I respect so many artists.

Films are a massive influence in my tracks. Especially when it comes to the more emotional and atmospheric beats. I often imagine a scene in a film and write a track around it.

Im going to continue doing what im doing if it moves away from dubstep then fair enough. Ive always done what comes natural.

I would live to do something live, get a drummer and bass player that would be sick

q_steppa wrote:what range of genres do u take influence from outside of dubstep?

what software/hardware do u use?

what is ur favourite reverb plugin?

any advice for people trying to make it in the business? (inb4 no trollin)'

have u ever considered coming down to new zealand for a gig? :D

if every artist/band in the world died, and u could only revive 3 for one gig, who would u select?

what do u usually do to ur drums to give them such a real/acoustic feeling to them?
Obviously in the past Metal and Rock, I listen to some crunk, hip hop, D&B, 2step garage, classical music what ever tickles my fancy.

I use a pc with Cubase 4, plus loads of plugins. I mainly use Native instruments software. Battery was the first bit of software I bought.

Favourite reverb is one which comes with Reaktor4 called something like fusion Reflections?

As for advice just try and create something new, the scene doesnt need another Skream or Burial.

Most important thing is to get your tracks heard, try and get top djs supporting your tunes.

Ive already played in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.

I would bring back Pantera.

I spend a lot of time hunting down live recorded drum loops, I then cut them up and construct my own loops from them.

Seconded.

Also PLEASE PLEASE break down the Synth and signal chain for the bass in Traffic. Oscillators/effects/filter types etc...Did you split the freqs at all to get it to sound like that?

Lowpass wrote:What is your production process when you approach a new song?

Any favourite chains for processing basslines?

How do your drum parts come together?

and finally... who do you think are some of the new artists that are gonna be big in the dubstep scene?
My approach is always different, 1 sample can inspire me enough to build a whole tune. Most times I start with a drum loop, then move on from there.

For my basslines I have two separate tracks one just for sub, the other for the mid bass which rides the sub.

For drums I just siv through loads of samples until i find sounds which complement each other.

I have my eye on a guy called Comodo at the moment, really feeling his stuff.

Do you prefer to produce on headphones or monitors?

What effects and processes do you go through with the percussive elements of the track once you have the pattern down?

nuff respect for your tunes.

When making Basslines do you normally split it into layers and effect each individually? Into how many layers / where would you normally make the splits?

What synth would you normally go to for atmospherics?

Got a favourite gadget ?
As I said before I dont have a set way of doing anything.

Well all my studio equipment is software based. Except for my guitar which I use now and then. I mainly use Native instruments stuff.

No Gadgets really??
