Interesting Issue with my DAW (Fruity Loops8)

Post by altered state » Mon Feb 09, 2009 7:33 pm

Yo,

Every (roughly) 2.5 seconds my CPU usage spikes to 99% - it does this regardless of having an full on tune loaded up or a blank new project.

Whats interesting is that my audio never stutters or anything i'm doing doesn't stutter - it's almost as if FL is reporting the usage wrong.

As you can see on this image, the CPU usage is right up and the graph below shoes the intervals between the spike. Always the same time apart.

Image

Does anyone know what causes this?

It doesn't bother me much as like I said its as if its just having the values read out wrong as nothing stutters or acts as if its under intense CPU pressure.

But it is annoying as its always in the corner of your eye spiking up and down - things like that annoy me.

Cheers.

then disable the CPU toolbar :)

I scan every day, nothing comes up. I can't really be bothered to re-install as I know i'll somehow fuck it up and make things worse lol....

largely depends what you scan with, check what software is running it might even be the antivirus itself taking the ram. Maybe you have more than one antivirus(BAD) etc. just hit ctrl+alt+del to see.

No I only run one AV - I thought the cpu meter only measures what the application is taking, not what other applications are using?

Just a guess, but have you changed power settings? Like, display off after 5 minutes, harddrive off after 10, etc?

I noticed both Reason and Ableton have elevated CPU usage when I have power saving crap on.

Hmm - I dont like to think its a virus for a few reasons.

One cause I like to think I know pc's very well and know how to spot them etc etc

And also beacuse I really don't visit any shady sites or download any wares or anything.

I guess i'll have to swallow my geek pride and check out to see if it IS a virus - but ive no noticed anything else strange....

Forgot to add, this has been doing this ever since I built this PC and installed loops - Another reason why I dont think its a virus as its done it from scratch.

Stinks of virus/malware/spyware bizzle tbh pal :(

Run MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyWare through that mofo tbh. Ever considered cancelling your credit cards etc too????

Presume you've got a legit version of FL8 and ting, because I've never had a problem with FL since v5, hth...

I dont own a credit card, but ill do some scans. I've got AdAware Pro - do you think this will do the trick?

ok google and run ccleaner, defragler, spybot, and avg free
also curious if you are running any apps maybe in taskbar or otherwise same time as daw (ie: aim, torrents etc)
also audio interface & ram specs
might be in your asio settings

I do an AVG scan every day - its just about to compelete todays but there wont be any difference as this issue has been around a long time.

I havnt used ccleaner for a while, but I will check it again. Just used SuperAntiSpyware free today, that turned up nothing but a few tracking cookies.

Generally the only other apps running is MSN, AVG, Ad-Watch and Windows Media player. However the issue is still there regardless of their status.

Okay, I ran PC Wizard today to monitor the CPU usage same time.
CPU load was around 20-30% whilst I was doing the AVG scan and typing this. However FruityLoops still shows it spiking up and down from ~10 to 99.

RAM: 4gig of 800MHz DDR2, split into 2 DIMMs of 2gig each.
As for audio i'm just using the built in soundcard on my Asus P5K-E mobo.

Cheers for the help.

this may sound nuts but open your box up and check your heatsink and make sure the thermal compound isnt dried to hell or leaking
also post up your asio4all settings please

Thermal compound is fine, i'm using a Blue Orb 2 cpu heatsink and all fan speeds and temps are normal. This issue only occurs in FL8 - no other programs I run experience this.

How do I find my asio4all settings? I've tried googling but not much has come up...

Thats to do with referencing audio on hard disk I think, I would scandisk and defrag personally.
if it works fine, remove the processor meter as its a pain in your graphics cards ass.

My Fl8 was doing this aswell!!

Try messing with the buffer rate ( i think thats what its called on FL??)

Seemed to do the trick for me!!

have you compared it with the CPU meter in task manager to make sure its giving you the correct figure through FL?

Hmm, my graphics card wont be feeling any pain from that trust.... I've got two of the beauties encased in one tight body, with smooth milky grooves and lushious....sorry I forgot where I was going with that one.

I'll give that a go man, good to hear its not unique to me!

Yup, i've compared it to loads of things. Everything else reads normal rates for idle or intense pressure (intense = Crysis on ultra high) - its just as if fruity loops is reading wrong.

Nothing else even registers the spike, its tottaly unique to FL.
