I have never used presets, but sometimes when I'm making a new sound I'll start with a preset and work from there. I have no problem with people using presets though. if it's the sound you need, why not use it.

Depends on what synths I'm using really....

Massive and Twin 2 I do it all from scratch. Absynth and FM8 I tend to use presets

I use presets. Just never for bass.
And I always process the presets quite heavily.

Since I started producing dubstep I reckon I've used like 5 presets.

I like making stuff myself, trouble is presets can sound so much sicker.

I think it's cos I'm well OCD about making tunes, I like to know exactly what's going on, and you don't with presets.

to me presets are just a basis for a sound. No preset works out of the box. They're iether made to sound impressive on thier own and they won't fit in a mix, or they just aren't what I'm looking for.

Presets are like a sample.

I start about 75% of my synth sounds with presets, though their all edited, unless im using an FM synth, then I might just play with the FX and leave the rest alone.

The percentage is definetly going down though as im gaining more knowlege.

my choice at the moment is...

a) Dont use presets and make loads of tunes that sound the same at a decent pace using the same combos of wave forms that im confertable with.

b) Hardly make any tunes at all and spend all night trying to make a sound im after becuase I refuse to use presets.

c) Use presets and have a larger sonic arsenal(sp?), and be able to produce at a rate which is fun.

I usually will start with a preset to write the melody, then go back and mess with it to make it "fit" more in the tune.

I have no problems with presets at all, or samples, or loops or whatever... like Ive said before, its all in what you do with it. I have to agree with 2oh1 on this. Just like DJing, really the only people who care are other producers. Even if you have friends with as good of musical taste as FSTZ, unless they produce themselves, they arent gonna know its a preset.

The thing I always go back to is the fact that we (for the most part) are making dance music. If it makes people dance, you win!

usually start with a preset i like and then build off it for synths. dont use presets for fx's tho.

i have nothing against presets, and use them occasionally.

i hear a sound in my head, and then i sit down with the synth and create it. presets give inspiration for tracks, but i would rather make a preset that comes from my own inspiration. it tastes better when its homegrown!

I find the presets on Massive in particular are always too crazy to put into a track..you'll always end up taking out an oscillator or putting filters on it. Good starting point but often not terribly useful.

I'm sick of hearing Electro Bass or Draht Bass on tracks tho.

I like looking at presets to see what buttons have been moved.

I think I focus on the same buttons too much and totally neglect others. If I do use a preset I have changed it so much I doubt anyone could tell what I started with.

sure I'll use presets, but I'll most always alter it in some way.

I really only use presets for a starting point, a place to get some motivation.

i'd never use a preset... why not figure out how to make your own sounds? Every body is bitching about people in here asking how to make a certain bass, and that they should create their own style, but at the same time saying that its alright to use presets? doesnt make any fucking sense to me...
