How many of you play live sets?

Post by lowpass » Thu Feb 19, 2009 9:55 pm

I was wondering how far in to producin' you were when you started to play live sets? I haven't been going long but I keep hearing that I should get some decks and do some live stuff.

If you don't already do gigs then do you plan to in the future and when?

I've only just started producing really but I love the idea of playing out. Feel like I gotta learn to produce a bit more before I think about mixing and even then it's like a whole other thing to learn isn't it :( Basically I'd love to play out but learning to mix seems like a lot of hassle to learn so I probably wont for ages.

i played two gigs last weekend playing my own tracks doing live loops and re-edits with ableton and squeezed in a few other producers tracks at the end...

i am working on a full set at the mo but i'm finding it a bit odd trying to work on tracks and then go on to work on the set structure too. need to make a decision and focus one or the other for a bit.

I just recently started to produce (just got Cubase last week), so I don't even have any tunes done yet. Haven't played any live shows, but I'd like to at some point.

i started makin tracks in 95
had records out from 95 onwards
no tnuc booked me for the first 4 years except when my mates or i put on our own nights
summat musta hit right record wise from 99 onwards cos i started getting proper paid gigs all over from there (that was the year i got t'internet so that mighta been it)
i do 30ish gigs a year round europe, germany mostly
not enough to give up my day job but its nice to travel to crazy parties for free
time was it'd cost a bomb to go clubbing, get fucked up
now i can do the same and still end up wi a wedge in me pocket... bonus

used to, but now = no, for a myriad of reasons...

to name a few~

I can't be arsed to play politics to get gigs
I prefer to save my hearing for the studio nowadays
Lugging tons of records/gear for a shit paying, one hour slot in the early AM just isn't worth it
I'd rather go and listen than have to worry about levels/bpm/shit gear
The time i spend trying to get a set together could easily be spent knocking out another wicked track
and on and on and on...

and yes, i'm geezerific Image

we play live...mostly improvisation on beats and bass

i have a couple of videos online demonstrating such...we're going to make a new one...but briefly; i use a custom programmed patch in reaktor to mash up beats and bass and other audio and then my partner in crime is a turntablist who scratches and cuts synths/vocals/other things over the whole output...i've stopped taking a midi keyboard to shows to play in synth lines simply because there is nowhere to put it in the booth and i can't be bothered to carry it.

it's alot of fun and more interactive than playing records...we've been working long and hard on our live show's but it still ain't perfect...demo video coming soon though.

been working on doing sets of my own shit off ableton. It's not got more complex than mixing between tracks yet. Been enjoying sculpting the sound of my DJ sets with my productions. makes for a nice cohesiveness. Got an hour of useable tunes now and probably same again (if not more) of stuff that i'll happily let slip to the wayside

i do, 1 dubstep gig so far, a few more in other genres,
i started playing in bands 94-95, and whit electronic instruments around 96.
playing live and jamming away feels pretty natural to me by now, so ofcourse i started thinking live right away when i got into dubstep.

still working on my setup.
core is reason wired thru FL whit some BCR/BCF controllers ,
atm its playable but a bit hard controlled and choppy sometimes.
need some more outs on the soundcard and some other minor things.
hopfully ill get some vids online soon.

i remember being at a mate's house party, for a 21st birthday party of one of the girls who lived there.

as i was walking down the corridor i said hello to this pretty blond girl. she just walks by. i'm like, whatever.

later on, me and my mate were rocking the laptops and decks, the same girl is dancing and giving me the eyes over her boyfriend's shoulder for ages.

8)
