If you're using mac I can recommend a nice tool called "super duper".
I've got mine set up to synchronize my hd with an external drive every night. If anything happens I can boot from the external drive and dump it back to a new hd.

I used to copy shit to dvd's and external drives, but I always managed to forget it for months so the backups were never really up to date. Now I don't have to worry at all.

For PC, i use the great syncback free edition.

Thinking of upgrading to pro (about £30) for lots of useful additions.

I too nearly lost everythign in a HD crash recently, my raid died, thought i was safe with a raid, but both went down :o

Managed to get most of it back but a real wake up call.

Good luck mike !
