Dubstep's future

Hey there,

I'm writing an article about Dubstep for a student paper and I'm kinda keen to give it the fairest and most accurate representation I can - I came here as this is pretty much the hub of the Dubstep scene on the net.

I was wondering if any of you active in the scene could let me know what they think Dubstep's mainstream exposure starting a couple of years ago has (or hasn't) done for the genre, and where you think Dubstep is currently heading?

Thanks in advance - hell, if I don't get shot down too badly I might even stick around.

It'll get better and more diverse as time goes on, but at the same time we'll all be nostalgic about when we first heard it and how even though it was a lot simpler back inna di day, it was better etc..

Also, it's probably going to get loads more popular as time goes on aswel, whenever i see a shitty dnb flyer, there's allways some room on the night with all the tear-out dubstep producers in there.

Reading things like this I always feel guilty for listening dubstep and buying a mainstream 12" sometimes. I always have a feeling I'm destroying the scene because I only discovered dubstep in 2007 and am already a DJ.

But yeah, it will grow bigger and bigger, becoming less or more mainstream, known all over the world. We will get more and more new producers, and all the old producers who had the biggest influence will be forgotten (like Horsepower Productions, El-B etc.).

I'm not saying this is a bad thing, or dubstep will become a "shit-scene", but in a few years it will be totally different.

mate don't feel guilty, and don't feel like you owe the old producers anything, we have fond memories of the past, but things change innit, we're all shaping the future sound of the scene.. and to be fair it's not like you're really that late to the game, dubstep hasn't even been around for that long in the grand scheme of most musical genres.
