ive been there...in as much as you can go to a place by enjoying a cigar that has come from that place.
i remember...it was really smokey there and hot at one end.

yeah bro i been there. some first thoughts:
definitely do travel around by yourselves and avoid tourist resorts such as varadero like the plague. they have nothing to do with cuba. if you still want to chill on bounty beaches, there's nice ones good to reach from trinidad in the south. beautiful little city too.
also don't miss santiago in the far east, which is the country's musical capital.
if you travel around i'd recommend to stay at 'casas particulares' = with cubans at home. they'll also be happy to cook for you. all at very reasonable prices & much, much better than crappy state hotels and restaurants.
oh yeah. if they still give out forms to fill out in the airplane b4 landing: you have to be able to name a hotel where you'll stay in havana. if you don't have one, pick a random one from a travelguide. otherwise they may force you to take a very expensive state-owned one. the airport is a bitch, but once you left it, you'll be fine.

Went to cuba a few years back, havana is obviously wicked!
smoke nice cigars and drink majito cocktails trust blood, snorcalling and catermarang trips is wicked oh yer lobsta is cheap as chips also have a wicked one

my homeboy jason's friend went down there and brought him back some cigars. damn, them things are so lovely.
even if you dont smoke, yo, try one of them shits anyway mang. cubans are a beast.
