I've had a few of these, first time it really did my head in but i spoke to a few peeps who told me the same thing as above, so i now ignore and delete.
I think the first time i got one, i did reply and click on the link, but i've had no grief... i think.
Out of interest, what would this cause? What info are they trying to get ?
The word phishing keeps coming up lately and i got IE 7 the other day, its got these phishing filters you can use. Do they work? or is it worth looking at getting some other kind of application to stop these 'Phishermen'...

I think in this case the "Dispute transaction" will link to a site that looks like a normal Paypal page, even as far as the address looking like a proper www.paypal.com address. This spoofed page will probably ask you to enter details such as your paypal login and password and possibly even bank/cc info. Enter that info and click submit and some naughty person has stolen this info.Cogent wrote:Out of interest, what would this cause? What info are they trying to get ?

The phishing filters in IE7 will supposedly check a suspect web address (there are ways of making addresses that look similar but are interpretted differently to the real address) against the correct address and against a database of known spoof/phishing addresses. I have no idea how effective this is, common sense is probably more useful.
Another way to check for phishing is to "view source" on your email. Paypal's site is always going to be >>>>>https<<<<://www.paypal.com.
Example : Roll over with your mouse on the link that's in the email. If you get something like this:
_http://___83.16.123.18/pp/update.htm?=https://www.paypal.com/=cmd_login_access
Then you know it's phishing.

forward the email direct to spoof@paypal.com and they'll endeavour to shut down the phishing site - they'll also email you back

I had three recently, and it caught me out - spoofed up an ebay auction where someone was apparently messaging me for further info - and I clicked the link (I thought there'd been an error or something) - a split second later realisng what what going on I logged into paypal and changed my password etc.

Yeah. It does seems to work on people who are suffering a momentary lapse in they're suspicion or people who are really thick. Not implying your thick KION, btw.KION wrote:I had three recently, and it caught me out - spoofed up an ebay auction where someone was apparently messaging me for further info - and I clicked the link (I thought there'd been an error or something) - a split second later realisng what what going on I logged into paypal and changed my password etc.
Its's quite odd that in the last week i've recieved 4 dodgy email's sent to my personal account. This has never happened before. I get loads to my hotmail account but thats just part of the deal. I'm just wondering if it's to do with the setting that i changed according to Seckles instructions on a nother thread?
