Flying Lotus - sHHH! EP
Must have for the arsenal.
Hey, theres alot of mp3 blogs out there im sure you agree. I know I don't write much or have much content other than mp3s but I'm not putting full blown albums out. The mp3's i post are not super new. They've been out and I just happen to post music I recently hear or have. I do support the artists 100% thats why i dedicate my time/money in a blog to promote them. If you wanna support them really, go to their shows...buy their tickets.. get some merch. (The music is what gets people to come).Rekordah wrote:I doubt it will see a repress and they are bootlegs after all, but still - I don't understand blogs that do this, what exactly are you gaining from illegally sharing music on your blog?
I know theres a argument for it as good promo and, in fact, I usually am in agreement with this. But I don't think that's really relevant in this case - these are small labels putting out brilliant music, why not just support them instead of effectively undermining them?
I can sort of understand the idea that it draws people towards your blog and can then expose your writing/journalism to a wider audience, but you're not writing anything? Just posting pictures of the artists and an mp3s of their music. I'm sorry but It stinks of getting props for other peoples hard work. I noticed that you've posted up a track of your own, which is cool by the way, but I doubt you're gonna win many friends in this game from these actions.
If you love the music then why not write about it, express what you like about it. The way I see it that would be as good as if not a better means of promoting people's work.
At least just post clips dude.
No bigs!kidlogic wrote:Now I feel bad, I definatly wasnt trying to imply he's not on the up and up... just wanted a little confirmation because of some recent posts (not mentioning his blog, just other blogs) where the author thought it was cool and ended up getting shit for it. Just me being extra cautious, cause Imma play the hell out of these if I feel comfortable with the reply.
I do see your argument Rekordah, but I wasnt trying to bring that kind of sentiment down on dude in the least with my comment. Maybe I should have done it in a PM.
Sorry, didnt mean to imply anything with that question Deevo.
cmon man, honestly who still buys music? ive only bought 4 cds i think in that past 2 years. if deevo just posts clips, and someone hears them and digs them... what are they gonna do next? do a blog search and find a link elsewhere. it's so easy nowadays. plus i kind of owe blogs for opening up entire genres to me. jazz, soul, prog & psych rock, samba & bossa nova ... stuff you cant just buy (not easily at least). i actually contribute to a blog with minimal journalism and lots of links. i dont feel bad about it, especially if turns a couple hundred people on to a new artist they would otherwise never hear of.Rekordah wrote:post
I do see where you're coming from, and I wasn't trying to come down hard on you. I was a bit harsh about the "props from other people's hard work" comment, I'm sure you have good intentions - spreading the music, promoting artists/releases etc.deevo wrote:Hey, theres alot of mp3 blogs out there im sure you agree. I will start putting links up to shoopping carts and writing more about the artists i look up to but i'm still debating on just putting at least 1 mp3 for promotional uses and people to rip/burn, pass around, and bump wherever they go. Its an art, i make music myself.. i do shows, i give out free tracks all the time for promotional terms.. this type of music's still lowkey and we all needa help spreading it.
I do however will take down any post if asked. (Immediately)...
I agree and disagree. Lord knows I've stolen some music.Constrobuz wrote:cmon man, honestly who still buys music? ive only bought 4 cds i think in that past 2 years. if deevo just posts clips, and someone hears them and digs them... what are they gonna do next? do a blog search and find a link elsewhere. it's so easy nowadays. plus i kind of owe blogs for opening up entire genres to me. jazz, soul, prog & psych rock, samba & bossa nova ... stuff you cant just buy (not easily at least). i actually contribute to a blog with minimal journalism and lots of links. i dont feel bad about it, especially if turns a couple hundred people on to a new artist they would otherwise never hear of.Rekordah wrote:post

Yeah, "sharity" blogs (which I think you're refering to when you say jazz, soul, prog etc.) are cool and I've found a load of good music that I would of never ever listened to if it weren't for them. But the fundamental difference is that the music posted on them is very old, out of print, probably will never be reissued and is only available in digital form because someone has ripped the tracks from wax.Constrobuz wrote:cmon man, honestly who still buys music? ive only bought 4 cds i think in that past 2 years. if deevo just posts clips, and someone hears them and digs them... what are they gonna do next? do a blog search and find a link elsewhere. it's so easy nowadays. plus i kind of owe blogs for opening up entire genres to me. jazz, soul, prog & psych rock, samba & bossa nova ... stuff you cant just buy (not easily at least). i actually contribute to a blog with minimal journalism and lots of links. i dont feel bad about it, especially if turns a couple hundred people on to a new artist they would otherwise never hear of.Rekordah wrote:post
you'd be surprised by how many old psych and prog albums actually do get reissued on CD, but thats another story.Rekordah wrote:Yeah, "sharity" blogs (which I think you're refering to when you say jazz, soul, prog etc.) are cool and I've found a load of good music that I would of never ever listened to if it weren't for them. And yeah I see your point about listening to a clip and then just finding a free download elsewhere rather than going and buying it - I admit i'm guilty of that too - but seriously, how many blogs are out there where you can find free downloads from Onra, Bullion, HOC etc? Serious question. Because I've looked for free downloads of this type of shit before and found nothing.
This is true to an extent, and like I said before I agree that doing this promotes the artist and their music. And yeah, playing shows is definitely what most artists in this game will make most of their money from. Releases generate next to no income, and their major function is to get the artist's name and music out there so the public can enjoy it and the artist will get booked to play more shows and get bigger fees.deevo wrote:If you wanna support them really, go to their shows...buy their tickets.. get some merch. i dunno about others but i think this attitude really fucking bites.Constrobuz wrote:cmon man, honestly who still buys music? ive only bought 4 cds i think in that past 2 years. if deevo just posts clips, and someone hears them and digs them... what are they gonna do next? do a blog search and find a link elsewhere. it's so easy nowadays. plus i kind of owe blogs for opening up entire genres to me. jazz, soul, prog & psych rock, samba & bossa nova ... stuff you cant just buy (not easily at least). i actually contribute to a blog with minimal journalism and lots of links. i dont feel bad about it, especially if turns a couple hundred people on to a new artist they would otherwise never hear of.Rekordah wrote:post

"i'll do it cause everyone else is doing it"
or
"i'll do it cause the artist might want me to, to get some promo". 99.999% of the time they dont, especially if it's a full ep/album.
or
"it'll sell them tickets or merch".. eh maybe, but if they want you to post stuff they will usually get in touch or you should ask first. it wont sell them records that's for sure.
also blogs that put up disclaimers saying shit is for preview... what planet is that from.
i love blogs for the discovery angle, and you make a good point about opening up new music which i agree with - but you can discover music and post links to tracks (not full album zips) at 128k (not 320) and get exactly the same result.
