Most journalists aren't experts on anything apart from writing to order. The editor of their section says "I want 800 words on dubstep / vegetarian restaurants / dogging" then they do a Google search to get a vague feel for the subject and make the rest up as they go along. They assume that enough of the readers know less than they do for them to get away with it. It's only when it's about something that you're interested in that you realise they're just spouting a load of old bollocks for 10p a word and probably don't know the difference between a shit and a shave.BEN? wrote:lol, when i read this i had a bit of a giggle at how ignorant the writers are of the genres they suppose to know so much about.
It was on the front page of the guide which was a bit odd.
whats more is that the article was entitled something like 'stuff to keep you ahead of the game for 5 minutes' or something meaning cool new things.
Yet they had an article on lolcats which have been around for years!
the guide's unbelievable definition of dubstep

... it didn't occur to the writer that perhaps new musical genres aren't named randomly but have an etiology. this journalist, being as stuffy and cynical as they are, probably assume that Dubstep is only called so to maximize its marketing potential... when in fact its nomenclature is a description of its essence.
... unless they were actually trying to hint at some uber-modern genre thats only been in existence for 3 weeks... in that case why not just call it U.K. Wonkstep and be done with it ...

OTOH when they aren't talking about youth culture (which frankly fucking noone in the mainstream media knows shit about) (except when they have people like Dan Hancox writing for them) the grauniad tend to get in quite a lot of people who actually do know what the fuck is going on.
