anyhoo ive seen that non beatmatching style for a while - mostly getotech djs. kinda shocking the first time you see it.

yep, sad but true, plus it's the easiest music you could ever imagine to beat match... and as far as fast mixing goes, we've got dnb dj's out here who tend to drop ±70 tunes an hour seamlessly on average.

that sloppy non beat matching mix style - is a specific style. its like complaining a bebop player is being sloppy or like complaining that its too bad that picasso has so much trouble with realism.

Indeed, it just depends (as for my opinion) if you look at it from an artform or entertainment perspective i guess... I believe he's not lacking the skill needed if you look at his position in the scene as wel as other things he's done

people can be entertained by a variety of styles. from super quantized minimal beats with no swing to completely organic freeform beats played by live musicians.

strange f'd up sounding music to some people might be next level to some one else.

if youre still djing in 20 years it would be interesting to see how your taste may have evolved. what you might find interesting.

dub/dubstep can be chaotic and bizarre, no? or is it more important to be HARD and robotic?

exactly, thats the way hes been playing this music since 1992 when UR started and as the wizard in detroit, just layering track upon track and doing live remixes on the fly. You could listen to a waveform transmission era 12'', X-101 or H&M and just know where his head is at and his style as a Dj. Furious disjointed atonal melodies over a minimal 909 pattern. His mixes slam like f-15 fighter jets and thats the way he wants play it.

Its quite funny that theres people here saying Mills is a crap dj and can't beat match etc.

b) You obviously havent listened to Mills in his prime . And if you have and you think he can't mix , you'd be better of just starting a thread to find out something like what colour everyones record bag is, or whatever

Mills isa great dj to see but as far as caining through records with precision in tekkers its all about ben simms.

look this ain't punk. listening to galloping quantized beats is no fun.

i love mills, love his productions and respect the pivotal role he's played in dance music.

HOWEVER, be big enough to admit that he can fuck a mix up like nobody's business. arse-kissery means lots of people go, "ah well that's mills- he's a genius/legend/doing it deliberately/you just don't get his polyrhythmic brilliance so you must be musically deficient in some way" etc. etc.

anybody else and you'd be berating their arse for clanging.

I didn't disrespect mills, I made a comparison... In fact I've seen some sets of him and had a good time, so I can't say I don't like his style.
It's not my favorite type of music anymore, true, but I can still appreciate it... I'm not here to dis anyone, but I'm pretty sure he's not the fastest dj ever as this thread stated, only comment I tried to make...
I go from breakcore to minimal, you won't hear me complaining about experimental stuff

I think the best way to put it into words is this....

If I got up there as a third generation DJ and mixed the same way Jeff Mills does, everyone would leave the dancefloor. He can do it because he is a first generation DJ, and because he is Jeff Mills, period. He can also charge a large lump sum per gig to do it.

Being a crap DJ or not is a matter of opinion. I am just stating the facts. My opinion doesn't really enter into the matter.
