how essential are they and what can you do with them?

But it's not essential to produce in general, alot of people i know produce without one..
It does speed up your workflow by 75% though!

Why don't you just play it and then set some false notes right?
I can';t play, well a bit though, but still produce with playing everything. Just adjust them saves more work and the fun increases....
