Where do you put your kick drums in the stereo field?

i'd like to sit them precisely at the center but wouldn't that interfere with the bass?

i have herd in some tracks the sub bass is split into stereo and panned slightly left and right and the bass drum dead center.
was on some song on watch the ride cant remember what ones off the top of my head tho.

i could be wrong tho just was what it sounded like.

Always, always, always in the centre for my kick drums.

Everything else (apart from maybe my main Snare) has license to roam the audio spectral plane...

maybe i should just start producing on that or go back to reason. the lack of filters and general tweaking of synths in the mpc isnt very conducive for dubstep.

Wasn't he suggesting how he Eq's the kick and sidechains it with the bass to stop them from intefering?

as a rule i mono anything below 240Hz, kick included as these frequencies are forming a solid foundation of the tune which doesn't want to be compromised by phase interference and cancellation weather its down to the samples used or dodgy speaker placement of many club set ups

Straight down the middle for all the aforementioned reasons.

This topic reminded me of some old jamaican 7"s i've got recorded in dual mono(?) with vocal cut on left say and dub version cut to the right, or even with instrumental on left and vocal only on the right.

R's post seemed pretty self-explanatory to me. The guy said "I'd like to sit them precisely at the center but wouldn't that interfere with the bass?", so R put a very clear, concise post on how to keep it from interfering. With pictures.

But whatevs...

As with all things you should consider what you want to do with your music. Are you producing for the club? If yes, then I would keep it right down the center as previously stated. If not, then the world is your oyster... get as freaky as you want.
