Best set you've seen? Discuss

Post by lukelivuni » Thu Apr 16, 2009 9:45 am

I've been cruising round this site for time and I'm finally taking the plunge into posting, so...Hi. I have been addicted to dubstep for about 18 months and this morning I have been enjoying the memories of trying to work out the best set I have had the pleasure to witness and I have got it down to two:

Headhunter at the night Pace Yourself in Liverpool - blew me away; and,
Chefal on the boat party at Outlook - The novelty of the boat probably added to this../

Fucking great times :D !!

the best set i ever saw was modeselektor at bangface weekender last year, it was just completley perfect in every way, especially the sound quality.

the best dubstepy set i ever saw was probably either bass clef at the dissident vs life4land soundclash in 2006, or ebola at the ode festival last year.

Bass Clef at Bloc Weekender.

The dude plays instruments in his live sets, has infinitely more creativity than most DJs, plays a variey of original heavy beats, and in this instance the audio was over a Funkion 1 system. Big!

In fact probably one of the best artists from any genre I've seen Live. Makes Aphex Twin seem like pretentious wank and Squarepusher self indulgent toss, even though I rate both highly.

Mala - vibes
Pinch - deepness
Appleblim - innovation
Lexxus - skills
Hyetal - perfect selection of unknown gems and flawless mixing

these guys made me enjoy the music like there was no one else around

also Goth-trad's live set got me dancing like mad, but that was mainly because I was totally drunk so I don't even remember what he played... shame on me :)

ultimate out-of-this-world dance music experience:

Amon Tobin (most charismatic DJ ever)
Aphex Twin & Hecker (absolute brainwashing experience)

dnb honourables:

Fanu (the atmosphere)
Marky (the joy and energy)

DnB:
Mampi Swift and Aki same night last year was amazing
Noisia last summer at gatecrasher
Fanu this year

Need to start hitting up London more though, get the impression people play it alot safer when they come up these parts. I saw Chase and Status the other week and it was one of the worst things I have ever seen, such a rehearsed co-ordinated performance between them and these two Mcs/ 'singers', nothing original very bland and to top it off it was the first exclusive club play of Snoop Doggs take on Dub-Step...all in all it was shocking

Flying Lotus @ Big Chill
Luke Vibert @ Somewhere I cant remember
Distance @ Monster Monster

Plus Youngsta, Mala, Kode 9... there are too many to mention and too many I've forgotten...

Billy Nasty. Headcharge@Sheffield Arches c.1998; incredible set in incredible time.

Ed Rush. Sabotage@Sheffield Republic c.1998; wicked dirty set.

Richard Devine. Big Bang@Sheffield Ski Village 2002/3; first time I heard that really heavy IDM sound live through an awesome sound system.
