Publishing? Whats the score?
I've had a few of my Breaks tunes played on Annie Nightingales radio 1 show over the last month or so, and I just found out that I can claim for some royalties. (Nearly £20 a minute from the BBC!)
I believe I can chase up these royalties myself via PRS but I have no idea where to start and I can't really be arsed with the paper work.
Basically I'm looking to sign up with a publishing company who can do all this for me. I've contacted one company who have given me some details, and they're saying they can setup a publishing company for me, which they will run and sort all the office stuff out. This will all be done for a 18% fee. Is this any good? Any other heads signed with anyone they can recommend? I need some direction yo.....
Thanks

PRS membership is very little hassle, do it yourself.Likkle Bantam wrote:I've had a few of my Breaks tunes played on Annie Nightingales radio 1 show over the last month or so, and I just found out that I can claim for some royalties. (Nearly £20 a minute from the BBC!)

a standard cut in dance music these days is 30% - so 18 is very low. almost suspiciously low, i would say.
but as paulie says, joining the PRS is pretty easy. you have to register each track which takes a little while, but you can join and register half a dozen tracks in a morning. it'll save you 50 quid in publishers fees which is quite a worthwhile morning and you'll get the money quicker too.
generally in the music biz if you can do something yourself it is worthwhile to do so. other people just tend to forget to pay you or accidentally pay you too little or never reply to their emails or are just plain stnuc.

This, basically.Paulie wrote: PRS membership is very little hassle, do it yourself.
PRS reclaiming is up to about 18 months - 2 years prior but stuff hangs around on the system longer sometimes. BAsically beyond 2 years it's a bit of a lottery..
radio 1 is the banker - Kiss is only gonna be a quid or so per minute, likewise with 1xtra etc etc. but yeah, get on it!CaoS wrote:how long can they back date for? is it possible to claim for music played on 1x and kiss from like 2/3years ago? if its that kinda money per minute i must have missed a fair amount of "bank" lol i actualy really wana know this now if poss
PRS tweaked the rates a bit before Xmas, so R1 plays are a little less but stations like Kiss, 1Xtra, Asian network and the regional BBC stations pay a bit more. All adds up anyway..setspeed wrote:radio 1 is the banker - Kiss is only gonna be a quid or so per minute, likewise with 1xtra etc etc. but yeah, get on it!
