THE DEAL WITH TORRENTZ
DSF production massive:
Those of you who follow the news (I know, I know, booooooorrrring) might have noticed over the last few weeks that the owners of the massive torrent-sharing website The Pirate Bay have been indicted, tried, found guilty, and sentence to prison for copyright infringement. Now granted, the trial took place in Sweden, but the fact is that both the law and copyright owners take infringement VERY seriously.
By allowing illegal downloads of copyrighted material to go on over here, even harmlessly overlooked, it puts the DSF at risk of being party to infringement. As much as we, both as artists and a scene, support Creative Commons and the development of a new standard of sharing intellectual property, the fact remains that that's not the case right now.
SO:
for the love of god y'all, use some common sense. Posting torrents/cracks/etc has been illegal since day 1 on this site-- that's not going to change.
if you post up torrents or links to obviously copyrighted material (a snare drum or trumpet stab, ok. a whole lifted verse, not ok), we're gonna have to shut it down, unless a new plan can be devised.
There's a million other ways to share info; for material like this, keep it off the forum!
If for some reason you STILL feel the need to post up links to torrents, etc, understand that your thread will be locked and the standard treatment of your original post being deleted and replaced with a dig at your nan is in effect.

^ this is true.
though the majority of material that is discussed on this board that's relevant production IS in reference to pirated warez. Unfortunate, but such is the case right now.

Ways around warez
I've also been reading various reports on the music industry for the past couple of days, and it seems that copyright infringment is best taught about amongst peers. Thus, we should be sharing info on how to best protect our work, and the models for releasing our work that are both free and or can earn us money.
With the PirateBay people facing jail, and better education amongst musicians and software developers, hopefully music will become priced in such a way that people don't see 'free' as the best option anymore.
Two alternatives include; releasing/accessing music with a Creative Commons license, and using freeware software to make music.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
People enjoy sharing their creations for no monatory compensation. I think people should be reminded that they can find legally free stuff as easily as the illegal stuff.
Something that should be considered is the power of making connections with people. People are more likely to give music to their friends than they are to random punters. Thus, get on msn, get down to your local nights and make new friends. People will drop you new tunes regularly!
(Special mention and thanks goes out to Thark and Cadava, both of whom have been kind enough to send me their latest tunes for over a year! Keep up the great work guys!

What do you think?
Do you have any good links that help people find alternatives to illigal file sharing?

I read an article a few weeks ago saying that bands are making more money now through ticket sales and merchandise sold at gigs than ever before, so much so that they've even stopped selling CDs at gigs because they carry less profit than the ubiquitous T-Shirt. This I can only see as a good thing because a) they are having to do what musicians do and make music, live preferably (DJs/Producers included), to make a living, b) they're making money which isn't being raped by greedy, bloated, fish lipped, record company CEOs off the back of record sales, and c) there is far more chance of seeing artists you would like to see actually performing live infront of you for a nominal fee(Madonna/U2 et al not included).
As I understand it if ticket and t-shirt sales are to be the keepsake of modern music, and if record comanies failed to keep up with the internet for over 10 years, or the demands for lower priced CDs for even longer than that, maybe they wouldn't be having to claw their copyrights through foreign courts on dubious charges resulting in token prison sentences. Record companies made their money, squandered it, wallowed in piles of cocaine and yes men, and now realise the party has moved on. It stinks.

I dunno about for free, but it should be dirt cheap. It would slowly add up to be alot of money over time and would make the person(s) who created the file/movie/program/album happy because nobody should work for free in this worldBrisance wrote:The obvious way to fight off any form of piracy is to make the goods free in the first place. You don't see people pirating linux or anything. Same thing goes for music.

I totally agree with this sticky. But what about for example the accapella torrent we posted a few weeks back? Is that illegal to?TeReKeTe wrote:^ this is true.

Since two weeks back, i hear more and more rumors about how the U.N. is discussing a new law for internet use at the moment. If this law comes true,
internet will be sold in packages to everyone. So you could not even go to
torrent or warez sites. Simply because it will not be included in the package

I think this will totally block freedom to find things you want on the net. You wouldn't even be able to visit your mate's site without paying for the extra package!
On the other hand it WOULD force people to BUY records again like in the good old days

Again, these are rumors. But i seem to hear more and more about them lately. I even heard some newsreporter on the netherlands newschannel talk about it...
Higgz, if that is true, then that's just retarded :S
I used to download a lot of movies, if I couldn't I wouldn't go to the cinema either(ubless it was a really good movie, which I would go see even if I could download it) and wait until it gets aired on TV. Movies could get more money if they just would make them available to down load, but add a moderate amount of ads in between the movie. They really need to keep up with technology and get their head out their ass.

one can never be carefull enought i guess, the piratebay trial opens up for lawsuits on everything that links to copyright material, (totally rediculus imho, im waiting for someone to sue google)
but latest news here in sweden is that its probably gonna be a re-trial,
the judge has been found guilty of beeing partial in the case.
