Remix Challenge: Remix our original Reggae tune

Post by everydayprophet » Thu Apr 09, 2009 11:20 pm

Greetings to all headz!

We are a "Reggaetronic Rock" band from Portland, OR, USA, and we are seeking DJs/Producers to remix one of our tunes.

This is to be done in the spirit of sharing, so no money will be made off of any of the tunes, unless specifically arranged with the DJ. We just want to share music and collaborate, and spread the vibe of different styles of music. We will post the remix on our website and/or other music websites in order to promote the DJ and the Band, and just because it's cool.

We currently have a Romanian Trance DJ and a British Ambient DJ starting their remixes, but we need someone to represent for the Dubstep massive!! Are you the one??

The original tune can be found here (147 bpm):
http://www.everydayprophets.com/music/Lazerbeam.mp3

The a'capella in WAV format, along with a couple other samples, are located in the "Laser beam DJ Mixes" folder here:
http://idisk.mac.com/borfusw-Public

If you are interested, shoot me an message through our website so I know how much interest we have..

Let me know!

It doesn't sounds as though this was done to a metronome... The vocals atleast.
Ah well, some chop-splicery will do the trick ;)
Debut album "Bass, Space, Pace & Peace" out now on Methodology Recordings!
Cheers to all supporters and those who've dropped tracks in their shows!! :e:

Yeah, you know when we recorded it, we did it to a metronome, but folks seem to be having some trouble getting the vox to match up perfectly.

I wonder if that's a side effect of the live music---->computer music transition-- i.e. Since it was originally recorded by a live drummer, it'll never match up just right?

So how do people remix old classic rock or reggae tunes that aren't 100% perfect tempo? Just takes a little more work, I imagine...

N

EDIT: Are you guys trying it at 147bpm or stretching the vox?

You just have to really chop up the vox, usually to each syllable (or place where you want the vox to fall on the beat) and shuffle it around manually.

Post it up Everyday! I love it!

As for the vox I had to use some complex warping in Ableton to get those accented part sto line up.

'lazerbeam, lazer,...." was out of time pretty much the whole way through until I place some warp markers on the proper hits. It weren't easy actually, but it did work.. sorta. Also I used the complex warping mose for clearer tones. I think I actually had mine at 152 bpm. Sometimes increasing the tempo just slightly can't mask the time issues a la junglist mixing.

I'm not completely finished mixing this tune as I have a 2nd one happening with a wonky UK bassline feel to it.

Thanks for putting in the time. Definitely learning a lot on this end regarding what makes things easier for DJs...

ps. Jahknow, I noticed you're in Yellow Springs- we're throwing a reggae/rock show in Richmond, IN in August. Check it out here:
http://www.everydayprophets.com/prophetsfest.html

ps. If you know any reggae-influenced DJs that might be interested in spinning a set at the event, send them my way.

you got to use ableton live, it's sick. All I use

you can go in the sequencer and align the beats to fit the tempo of any tune...

It's called warping...

I might be down to give this a shot..

On the DL now
