Psy Dubstep?

Post by j wilderness » Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:21 pm

Im relativity new to the dubstep scene and have just been getting more into the psychedelic sounds of dubstep (sooooooooo GOOOOD). If anyone could direct me as to what artist and or labels cater to this kind of sound, or even specific singles that you think I would go batshit for that would be awesome. cheers!

Having spent alot of time listening to 'psyche'/psychadelic music (freakbeat/60's/west coast country) i would say that aside from Dubby/reggae or straight up grime influenced dubstep...most dubstep is psychedelic in my opinion...by this i mean the psychadelic element is subjective...

what is the criteria you have for psychedelia?

Erm, sorry this isnt much help (ill have a better look in a min) but I do remember there being a mix floating around the mixes section for ages that claimed to be a psy-dubstep mix. Never listened to it myself, but i remember seeing it...

Bear with me :)

Oh! And if youre into the more 2-steppy side of things, OMG you need to check out everything to do with Whistla, Littlefoot & Dawntreader, EFRA and a few others from out that way. All on subfm on the regular, always sick shows. Check out L2S recordings, aswell as oxrider records (Im pretty sure its oxrider)

Lol.Dub is psychedelic bro.If you think it's not, you're just listening to Reggae(which has a touch of psyche in it as well).

In order to make it easier to find what you want, try a variety and then start with I like this '....' is there anything else like it?
Here are some suggestions for a bit of a cross section of stuff that I'm sure people can add a lot to still, many of these producers have also done more than one style of dubstep:
(another disclaimer, I'm also based on US west coast so may list more from this end of the pond, but love many from all over):
Kode 9
Heyoka
Mimosa
16 Bit
Distance
Skream
ill.gates
An-ten-nae
Scuba
Emalkay
Antiserum
DZ
DJG
Trillbass
LayerZ
Excision
Sub Swara
Starkey
Babylon System
Sukh Night
...........................
another thought:
It's tough to say what people find psychedelic sometimes as it's quiet a subjective thing.
I know a lot of psy trancers who've gotten into dubstep and often it's the big square basslines that get some folks and other times it's all sine waves and wobbles.
It's also different if you're thinking good sativae psychedelic or DMT psychedelic.
I feel dub in general is pretty psychedelic and hence it's home in so much underground / counter culture in the past few decades.

I believe this may be the one you're referring to ;)

(Though if there's another more recent, I'm keen to hear it :))

what i am really referring to is dubstep with a very mininmal/psytrance sound. ei. long filter sweeps on breaks, lots of clicky frequencies and a very spacious sound. i don't wanna toot horns but music like the one Gravity in the dubs section....

word Shards. I came accross Nagual Sound a while ago. sickness.. i just love this psytrance/dubstep sound so much. Ive got allot of peeps in the psy trance scene. hopefully they c an direct me on some production techniques cuz im pretty much all junglist over here.lol. psytrance was the first elcetrnic music I ever jammed to tho.

did someone say burner music???? I totally burn homey. burn much and much of the bomb shrubberies...lol

if you just want to lay back and trip, i would recommend listening to The Widdler, his music has so many levels of depth it makes you feel like your inside of the track or something

My mix Green Desert might well fit the bill, CyrusFX has described it as "tripped out neopsychedelia", link below...

Its funny because 2 of those people on that long list are acquaintances from my home town. Ill Gates Aka The Phat Conductor and DZ. They are both really good producers for sure. I think Ill Gates actually was also a psytrance producer a long time a ago.
