Note to self: Don't blow up computer....

Post by lojik » Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:31 am

So yesterday I spent about 4 hours working on my dad's computer, completely gutting it and replacing most of the core components (motherboard, processor, RAM, graphics, CD Drive) and getting it all working fine, then I decide to spend 5 minutes adding his old RAM to my computer and BAM. Computer doesn't start, burning smell and my comp is fucked :(

Becuase his old system was AMD and so was mine I thought it would be fine, turns out I forgot that he didn't have a dual core and I did. Bugger.

The worst part is hearing a bassline in my head and not being able to get it down becuase I don't have a production computer until replacement parts arrive. Note to others, double check before you put things in your computer ;)

Coz it's only the second time I've done it and there were a few little problems along the way which I had to troubleshoot, plus becuase it was my dads computer I was kind of working on a track at the same time lol.

Indeed.
Besides there's no way using inadequate ram can toast anything.
Sounds weird to me.

Its probably more to do with the type of ram he has, if it was old old old (like most dad's computers) then DDR1 wont do a modern mobo very good.

The ram timings will be too slow, and the dual core/any modern processor will basically over heat the things as they try to keep up

normally you cant put sd-ram into ddr-slots without using a sledgehammer because the slots dont even match. :D
the same thing with ddr1/ddr2 slots.

i think your power supply got shorted. (shortened? dunno.)

may the force NOT be with you next time! ;)
