New Burial & Four Tet 12"
wow .
You can just hear the rhythms from Archangel, Versus & United in there.
Influence is one thing, but this is just ripping off.
I actually don't like these tunes because I think they sound rather empty and soulless (but perhaps that is because I know they are made by some dude in Brighton that thinks he's Burial...)
oh and sampling "ring my bell" in a tune is just wrong.

A woodblock is a woodblock, and 2 step is 2 step. How many tunes about at this time, now use the sidestick/woodblock/clave in a 2 step rythmn?
Loads.
Immitation can be the sincerest form of flattery, however, I reckon this only really works if there's something new to said or gained from the form.
Not if it's a straight copy. This much is patently obvious to most...
Classical composers like Mozart and Bach used to copy or assimilate the ideas of contemporaries. Just as the Beatles and Stones took from the blues to fashion a different variation on the theme. Look at Motown, a whole sound and style of music that began as a formula in order to sell records to a particular market. This has been, and will go on for ever.
I can't see a problem experimenting with certain sounds and beats and creating or injecting something new and different into it.
Otherwise what's the point in making ar listenening to music anyway, it's a subjective point and matter of opinion. Doesn't make people change their minds ultimately.
Burial is and will be an influence to many, whether by immitation or subconcious act, just like Derrik May was an influence to a whole hoard of Techno pruducers/musicians. While the influences in some may not be immediately obvious it might be really obvius in others. It's the nature of evolution surely?
Burial is not alone, I mean I hear lots of dubstep that's clearly influenced by the 'Digital Mystics' or 'Benga' sound, and don't recall seeing any discussion about how their sounds/feel/beats are used by other producers.
Really there's going to be good and bad in all the genre's the thing is, most understand or appreciate when someone has put some effort and thought into their music, as really this should be what comes through, not the templeate for a type of sound.
Just my two penneth worth!

I didnt make a single mention of 2 step in my thread on the contrary that genre of music has been around alot longer than Burial and I am not foolish enough to think he has made up an entire genre on his own, my post was a comment on the fact that so many people spend a ridiculous amount of time discussing the mans musical flaws and yet the other half of people admire his work so much that they attempt to copy it and in fairness mate you hit the nail on the head with what you have posted right there.Feral Witchchild wrote:Burial doesn't own 2step, you know.jackquinox wrote:Never fails to suprise me 50% of people spend all there time being Guardian journalists and roving their critical eye over burials work the other 50% try and copy burials work in their own productions
I hate this whole "Oh u got female vocals and 2step beats? lol u copy burial" mentality. Aphex Twin was fucking with tasteful female vocal sampling ("Xtal") waaaaay before anyone even knew who the fuck Burial was, and I consider that track an equally important influence.
Though I'm not saying that there aren't people out there who are trying to copy everything about Burial because there are...
Listen to this shit.
THAT's copying Burial.
Like, to the point where if I turn my speakers down so all I can hear is that basic beat from "TypicalCritical", my mind fills in the rest with "Unite".
Not what most 2step producers on here do.
I was more talking about the fact that people treat a musician as if he has shat in their mouths if they dont like something he has made despite the fact that if he had not released South London Boroughs all those years ago on hyperdub I would never even have noticed this music they call dubstep (and yes I put Burial in with dubstep because it was released on hyperdub not a garage label like shelflife for example). It just seems unfair because he is after all only one man making the music that he wants to make not a politician forcing you to give 10p of every pound you earn into the tax office so lets cut the man some slack.

No its more of a tongue in cheek offering, I just got me paycheck and realise after job loss and governments screwing me for taxation that im more unhappy with the ten pence tax rate than a new burial release which is more a hark on me because I used to be all about music, its a shame we have to grow up really aint it.deamonds wrote:jaquinox man, i hope you dont think you are speaking for everybody in that last paragraph??
On the flip side i actually think some of that guys stuff that Feral posted is really good if not a 100% bite, put it this way he must play his music to people he knows and they all ask him the same thing....."is that a new burial track"
In fairness im as guilty as anyone for being influenced by Burial the only snippet of music I have ever posted on here was a 90 second Burial influenced 2 step/breaky number.

Picked up a copy this afternoon. First reaction was that there were some much better releases from the year so far and that the Burial sound had been superceded. Then I listened again (and again) and realised that there's deep quality lurking within ... it took a few plays to get my head round it. Wish I'd bought both copies I saw now. Only a fiver too.
Wolf Cub develops slowly with chiming gamelan sounds and intertwining melodies that build, ebb, resolve and decay.
Moth is a subdued housey bouncer that I first thought needed a bit of UK funky tweaking to make it sound more up to the minute... but again it takes a while to sink in. Four tet adds some sequenced keys while a disembodied vocal carries the shadow of a ghostly melody.

quite possibly, but his tracks are pretty good i must say; "typical critical" is up there with some of burials finest!Feral Witchchild wrote:this is probably the biggest bite in musical historyjackquinox wrote:

They are well burial-esque but like, the entirely of wobble now sounds exactly the same so how people can criticize the biting of actual good ideas/tunes is beyond me.

Yeah, on first listen, them myspace tunes are OK, however after listening a couple of times, it's clear the dude has sampled the burial beats and a few other bits and bobs. Particularly 'Archangel' on that first tune as has already been mentioned.
My issue with it is, it sounds almost like a photocopy of the Burial sound, IE a pale facsimile of the originator. There's not much in the way of melody in there, as someone said beforehand, there's no 'soul' to it all and it the tracks do sound a bit cold. It's all a bit dull really.
I don't want to slate the guy, but TBH it's not really my cuppa at all. Not a bad effort, but no ta. I'd be interested to hear what he could come up with without resorting to sampling his hero or copping the complete vibe....

Yeah its a sick 12" i love the fact that both songs are really long and develop really gradually.Feral Witchchild wrote:Alright, so I just got my hands on deez and I must say, those previews didn't really do the trax justice at all.

FOR SHAME!!!
By the way I'm loving this 12", the way both tracks develop is amazing, the bass on them is lush too.

Give me a jungle or garage beat and admit defeat.

Exactly, it would be one thing if he was just using similar beats, it's like he either sampled Burial's tunes straight up or somehow found the exact same sample sources.mondays child wrote:Yeah, on first listen, them myspace tunes are OK, however after listening a couple of times, it's clear the dude has sampled the burial beats and a few other bits and bobs.
