6" + sub or 8"s?

I'm looking at buying a pair of speakers to produce with and have been looking at KRKs as I like the build quality and the sound they come up with. However, producing dubstep I need to be able to produce powerful bass. I still want the sound to be accurate so its not playing bass that isnt there but my setup needs to be able to show how a tune would sound on a system.

Just wondered people opinions should I get RP6s and a 10" sub or a pair of RP8s?

Depends on your room. How big is it? Is it acoustically treated?

i would get the sub. you have to be careful with the levels though or you wont get enough bass in ur mix, but hey youll have a sub rite

pro's of getting 8's are that they could go louder than 6's and a sub. i think

Room is sort of ever changing. in london Its a sort of cubby hole so big speakers are probably less ideal but my uni house next year is a fairly big room and I'll focus it round my little studio bit in terms of acoustics though i'll have no soundproofing or anything.

Well the KRK's are proximity monitors so they need to be 2 feet away from you in front of your face to get the full range. Id go with the bigger ones if you can afford them, cause later youre gonna want to get bigger ones if you get the six. And it is all a matter of how much space you have on your desk too. When you get out of the proximity range your tunes sound way different depending on the acoustics in your room.

I have the 8's and a cheap little sub that only gives out everything bellow 60 hz. I have the volume only enough that it complements the 8's a tiny bit. Most of the bass comes out my monitors.

6s and the sub.

Your nearfield and don't really need the output of the larger monitors, but even the 8s are not full range. To properly mix music, you need the entire spectrum, especially for bass music.

sounds like a good point but as pets bud said will i not eventually want to get 8s anyway? is it worth getting 8s now and saving up for the matched sub to buy in 6 months or so?

I'm in the same boat and settled on a pair of 8's. From what I've been reading a sub is pretty tough to get calibrated. Much more difficult than just a set of monitors. I have no actual experience though, so I'm basing this off of things I've read.

if you are in a small room, and especially an untreated small room, the sub will do much more harm than good to your mixes.

I have read that calibration is a pain in the ass and the main thing i want to avoid is an overly bassy setup because when translated to a system, a tune that sounds fat on my setup could sound weak. I reckon 8s could avoid a lot of hassle of an overpowering sub while still offering good bass response.

Then again 6s and a sub or even 5s plus sub are tempting for the actual bass weight offered. I might try them side by side somewhere and see what I reckon.

I am by no means a pro, and I understand it's hard to get a Sub perfectly calibrated.

However, I just got KRK RP5s and the 10s Sub and it's amazing how much is going on with the low end that I couldn't hear before.

I set it up by comparing songs I liked with my own tracks and I have the volume on the sub turned down and the crossover I believe at 60hz.

I would rather have a mediocre calibrated sub where I can least hear 20 - 100hz than not know what's going on down there at all.

That's my non-pro opinion though.
