"Total Vinyl" Mastering and pressing.. any good??

Post by ihatefakers » Mon May 11, 2009 1:58 am

Would anyone recomend "Total Vinyl" for mastering and pressing dubstep vinyl releases?

I've used total a couple of times, but it was not for dubstep so can't comment on that side of it.

The mastering to vinyl they did for us was fine, the quality of vinyl/press was great, but the actual process was pretty drawn out. both times its ended up taking 2 months (from making the initial order) to get the finished copies.

takes a very long time! sometimes the Test Presses you get back sound fine and then there's crackles all over the final run! i wouldn't recommend them

for mastering/laquers - no. a friend of mine has his record come back almost completely mono.

for actually manufacturing, they're not too bad. if the test press comes back shit, just tell them to do another. they'll get it right eventually.

don't get me wrong, it's proper budget stuff, but they do an acceptable job.

use a broker instead like AGRM or Sound Performance, they will prob work out around the same price and will look after you properly. :4:

thanks alot, I tried agrm, they seem to be about £100 more expensive than going straight to total vinyl for 500 12" , maybe its worth the extra money though??

so far so good for us, would never master with them, all that equipment and they still can't use it properly seems pointless. If your just pressing then they are pretty cheap - just dont take any shit from them, remember you paid for a service ;)

You can get it pressed up for around that price elsewhere as well. I'd seriously pay a bit more with another company.

NO

that price list you looked at is broken down so you have to add alot of additional costs such as mastering, metal work, set up fees, stickers, disco bags, TPs, postage and VAT, and I think they are the old prices, I think they have actually recently gone up as well.

According to AGRM they use Heathmans/Final Tweek to master and then they have about three different pressing plants they use as well (Total Vinyl is probably one of them), and they claim to offer a much faster turn around time going through them, so I think it is definately worth the extra cost.

I've used AGR many times and they are first class. Beware of the plants that reckon they're undercutting everyone else, the service is generally shit, it takes longer, they;re impossible to get hold of etc etc. I'm not talking about total though, i've never used them, but I have had bad experiences with others. AGR are top notch tho.
