Sorry UK Journalists!! Dubstep was invented in the USA

Post by njoys203 » Mon May 11, 2009 11:38 pm

in the 90s.

Not trying to put myself in front of the firing squad but i could really give a fuck at this point. Plus I think its great to have opposing viewpoints and such since this is a "forum".

I found this article posted by my man fellow dj and lover of the dubs Raedawn. I mean the dude put me onto jungle and UK Hardcore back in 93 when i was 10. Anyways here's an letter/blog he recently wrote, peep:

Sorry UK Journalists!! Dubstep was invented in the USA in the 90s!!
Dubstep was invented BY U.S.A's CRUNK HIP HOP 90s RAP Groups n Dj's

"Biggup to all my homies in the Uk makin ill dubstep. But for the record, heads like Timberland, Dj Screw, Bone Thugs, Crucial Conflict, Outkast, Dead Prez etc...were doing the Earliest dubstep. Therefore Dubstep is
basically, "Bassline Crunk" ie Crunk with More prominent basslines from
Dnb. To say Dubstep programming came out of Garage or 2-step is INSANE!.....EVERY techno Producer on this earth has been influenced by Timberland whether they like to admit it or not. Dubstep is a Sub-set of Crunk which is a subset of Hip-Hop. In the US, the varying production styles of Marley Marl to Rza to Dr. Dre to Timberland to Just Blaze to Missy Elliot ALL take the name Hip-Hop. We dont say West-..Coast-..Disco-Hiphop to describe a track for example. Hip-Hop has so many styles and variations that we(progressive producers) don't get caught up in the fashion of making mad categories. Notice that all those myopic 90's rave categories are all mostly defunct. Micro Categories cant last long.

On Journalists:

Many of you fans out there might not know that these days, Most
Journalists are Djs. They create new names for existing sounds in an
attempt to be the poster boy's/girls of there own movement or hidden
agendas. I was just recently informed that Dubstep started on UK tv
first as a series created by Tv producers.....featuring many of the current biggest names......hmmmmmm.

On Race and Categorization:.. a brief Historical overview
Please be aware as well, That most major categories are racially based. (Ie created by racist journalists) African American Jazz was originally
called "Jungle Music" by the status quo at the time and was looking
down upon as being Savage. So they renamed it Swing to make a "new"
thing for the European and Euro American fans. Lawful segregation was
in place, so they wanted to make sure that dancehalls would NOT be
intergrated.
-Then African American Blues became Rock and Roll.........Many
artists such as Chuck Berry were persecuted as well as had many songs
robbed from them by Euro American and Euro english artists. The English
Journalists eventually called it Rock. Even when Some 70's albums which
are obviously Funk (associated with African Americans) like many of
David Bowies and Pink Floyd records, They called it Rock anyway. Funk
was always pretty Psychedelic to start.

-To
segregate Africans and Europeans who wanted to dance to funk together,
They made the name Disco and excluded many African Artists from the
scene.
-
Notice that ALL African American singers are Lumped into one category
called R&B ....from Beyonce to Aaliyah to R. Kelly to Pattie
Labelle to Nat king Cole to Aretha Franklin to Marvin Gaye!......that's
a pretty wide range of sounds for one Category. So basically if you are
of African Descent and make a song where you sing and there are no
guitars are not leads.....you will be called R&B
-Pop generally means you're a Caucasian singer who does not have a guitar as a leading sound. (go to your local record store to verify my assertion)
-Rock
generally means you're a Caucasian singer who uses a guitar as a lead
sound....(why do they still call Radiohead Rock!!!??)
-We all know what Happened to Dub and Reggae when the journalists started calling groups like the Police (who I Love) Rock...
-Even
New Wave was pretty much the Journalists way of saying Caucasian
Electro R&B ....it was pretty much the same as the freestyle and
"R&B" music of the time.....
- Even Spin Magazine tried to
segregate Hip-Hop when they FIRST started saying "Indie" Hip-Hop
.....not to be confused with "Underground" Hip-..Hop(African rappers from the 90's). They ran an article featuring All Caucasian Rappers (except Busdriver).....saying that this was the new thing. ...that was at the beginning of this decade
- Regarding Techno, House n Electro.......realize
the people like Juan Atkins, Lil Louis, Egyptian Lover etc etc make A
fraction amount of the Money that the European dudes make Paul
Okenfold, Moby etc.... (Also electro was always a part of hip-hop for
all the heads who see the fast dance rap as a new thing..)

Notice the Cycles

-Now back to Dubstep/../////////
Grime is infact a British form of Hip-Hop. Many of these beats were
Crunk inspired. Dubstep comes from that downtempo southern hip-hop
tradition that I grew up on in Atlanta. I find it perplexing when I see
the Atlanta Dubstep groups...cuz Crunk IS Dubstep. Many of these heads
are Reading and Believing the Press. They seem to wanna separate
themselves from Bonecrusher and all the Pop Crunk acts....makes sense.

Also
notice how BBC SEGREGATES AFRICAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC INTO 1XTRA!!!!
there's like maaaad styles of music lumped into one lil link while
Radio 1 and all the other's stations are nonstop playing songs by
people of European heritage. Notice how Mary Anne Hobbs(who I feel is
progressive) pushes mostly european producers. The Police and Society
are Attacking Grime as they tried with Hip-Hop. Guess what? It's not
gonna work. Our music is our culture.

Dubstep is catching on in the Burbs here in the Us as Trip-hop did in
the 90's,..but where is Trip-hop Now?...In retrospect we can realize
that it was a subset of hip-hop (portishead actually straight jacked a
few rza tracks and basslines)............. people always try n separate Grime and Dubstep.......but you cant really. It's all British Hip-hop. I urge all y'all to intergrate. Bassline music is indeed one of the newest movements of Hip-Hop.

I'm not tryna start any US-UK Beef ....but For the Record .....We finna BRING THE CRUNK HARDER and HEAVIER for 2009!!!!!
