Why? Have you heard Modus Operandi? Seeing as Burial has even said he's a big Photek obsecive I think it would sound like that. And also everyone i've spoken to about Burial says the same thing with in the first few sentences of the conversation.

I couldn't care less who he is. It's not like I'll ever be his best mate or marry his sister.

His tunes rule. Knowing anything about him won't ever change that.

it's actually pretty rudimentary imo, and he says that in some interview i read. he layers white noise/field recordings to hide that fact. Don't get me wrong the music is beautiful, and I really like it.

I don't think Burial sound like Photek, and I have heard Modus Operandi.
I think Burial sounds German.
Or continental, at least.
Maybe towards Matmos, Akufen, Kit Clayton, Pole, that end of things.
Maybe a bit Berndt Freidman even.
I do not care really who it is, known or unknown, but they've definetely got a bit of German in them. Or thereabouts.
Hang on...
It's Aphex Twin, isn't it!!?!!
OMG, it's actually The Eurythmics!!!!
No, I just found out, it's Mike Oldfield!!!!!!!

Well in knowing who he is, quite a bit I imagine. You did the interview, so presumably you know.

Not that it makes any difference really, good music's good music period. The rest of it's just Heat style titillation. All music should be about tunes over artists.

I'm more suspicious of the whole album being made in Soundforge - very impressive if he did, but can't see how it'd sound as good as it does.

And I don't think it sounds much like Photek either in all honesty.
Hmm....

you're right, 'better' was the wrong word. it's totally distinctive anyway and i think whatever he's doing with his drum processing sounds great. maybe it is just white noise but it's certainly fooling my ears if it is.

his name is irrelevant and i can assure you his very first release was the hyperdub 12".

"sound-engineering" or "noise-artistry"

I reckon that interview where s/he goes on about using hiss and crackle to cover mistakes is a bit modest.
it's a process called "arrangement."

Burial sounds good very loud or very quiet and that is an accomplishment in itself.

definetely could be done in soundforge, maybe there's a mic involved, maybe s/he plays wind instruments, maybe s/he has some tasty outboard and soundforge is used more for editing and layering.
anyway, if u apply yerself, soundforge is more than enough software.

yeh ive heard modus operandi. i think theyre almost polar opposites, burial's music (to me) is about warmth, emotion, soul, blurs... photek is precision, austerity, fear... burial feels personal while photek feels almost completely impersonal

dont get me wrong, i love photek, but i dont see similarity
